With every passing day, the decision of Starmer and his cabinet a) not to join the Iranian war b) to delay access to bases looks wiser and wiser. Trumpโs press conference last night shows he has no real idea what the objectives are and its duration is arbitrary.
This very straight news piece buried deep within the FT never uses words like corruption or insider dealing but every detail is quietly devastating. Why is the FT virtually alone in the UK media in covering this important story?
Everythingโs fine
NBCโs Richard Engel: โThe White House meme campaign is outraging many former US military commandersโฆ they say only someone who has never really seen combat would think itโs a joke and put out material like this.โ
This is unhinged. Imagine what it must be like in the inner circle?! ๐ฎ For Rubio to feel he must do this?!
Another good reason to switch to renewable energy sourcesโฆ..
The response isโฆ.comprehensive.
I have no words.
This will ruin her life, and may even result in her murder.
And this for what?
To "win over" a handful of racist reform voters.
The hate their country. They hates its values: meritocracy, pluralism, and being polite! They hate its legal system based on advocacy โ "leftie lawyers", "woke judges" โ arguably the foundation stone of the modern nation. They hate many of their fellow citizens.
They are not, in any way, patriotic.
This line was deliberate bragging. But there are other moments when it really sounds like dementiaโthe line about 6-year old girls, for example.
And I don't think it lets him off the hookโhe should stand down if he's sick, he is choosing not to, and his enablers are choosing to keep him in place.
So, any other news yesterday?
Anything important?
She doesnโt use genAI for historical research, she uses genAI to plagiarise the work of historians who conduct research.
To restore democracy and create a fairer, safer, greener world, we need massive taxes on the ultra-rich. As in the 1940s. People get confused about this. The main purpose of such taxes is *not* to raise revenue. The point is to stop the few dominating the many. It's an essential democratic measure.
thought the name rang a bell and though he's poshified himself - once upon a time he was "Craig Dillon" - I interviewed this guy back in 2019 as he was doing social media for MPs in a vaguely interesting way - crucially, he seemed entirely normal back then! yet another radicalisation case
Perfect summary of Reform's hypocrisy.
We need a lot more accountability like this.
The Hidden Costs of Oil Dependency NATIONAL BUDGETS, ECONOMIES, AND FOREIGN POLICY Around 72% of global oil reserves are controlled by members of OPEC. According to the US Dept of Energy, oil price shocks and market manipulation by OPEC cost the US economy roughly $2 trillion between 2004 and 2008. Within OPEC states, revenues from oil exports have significantly shaped political systems, allowing governments to finance state operations and consolidate power. Authoritarian regimes rely on oil income to fund security forces and suppress dissent. As the global shift toward renewable energy accelerates, countries heavily dependent on oil, and oil revenues, face growing risks of economic and political instability. โฝ๐ #OilDependency carries economic & political costs because supply is concentrated & traded through vulnerable chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz.
With around 72% of global reserves controlled by OPEC, price shocks can ripple through economies & shape foreign policy.

Yes! This, but globally!
We can all have energy sovereignty.
It won't be very long before "genuine human-made" becomes a stamp of quality, which we will have to pay extra for.
And let's not forget how fiercely both Reform and the Tories (and the right-wing media) wanted UK to be involved in this debacle. Thank goodness they weren't in charge.
The finest take down of the institution of monarchy and "class" and the grasping, greedy, venal, entitled, and very stupid people it enables that you will read today or any day.

Just killed a man's whole family and accidentally installed him as leader of Iran. We created Super Vengeance Boy and are just assuming he'll leave us alone.
โHe is, of course, a serial liar & prone to espousing completely contradictory positions within moments of each other.โ It is extraordinary to me that journalists continue to โanalyseโ Donald Trump without adding this constant caveat. It does readers, listeners & viewers a grave disservice.
Yeah. Possibly one of, if not THE most cowardly maneuvers I've EVER heard of. And they used #AI to make the order SOUND "legal"... #America is officially, the WORST! Ryan Grim @ryangrim An unarmed Iranian ship was invited, along with the U.S., to be part of an Indian Naval exercise, and its sailors paraded on land before the president. The U.S. at the last minute pulled out of the exercise and instead attacked the Iranian ship with a torpedo. Breaking with all norms of civilization and warfare, we then refused to rescue the drowning survivors. The Sri Lanka Navy was left to pull the dead bodies from the water. lam hard pressed to think of any other nation throughout history that would do something so cowardly and despicable. We are genuinely in a league of our own, and American media - mostly shrugging off the bombing of a girls school and acting as if carpet bombing Tehran is a normal military tactic-is deeply complicit Kanwal Sibal @KanwalSibal . 12h The Iranian ship will not be where it was if we had not invited it to talk part in our Milan exercise. Reporter: You just suggested that Iran somehow got its hands on a tomahawk and bombed its own elementary school on the first day of the war. But you're the only person in your government saying this. Why?
Trump: Because I just don't know enough about it.
When I was a kid the soviet president died in office, and because of political machinations, the inner circle pretended he was still alive (propped up) for about 6 months.
It was a mad situation.
This โฌ๏ธ is madder than that.
NEW piece from me @goodauth.bsky.social on the disastrous consequences of Trump and Rubio dismantling U.S. diplomacy. Managing the Iran War will be much harder; so will picking up the pieces. Diplomacy is a tool of war AND of peace.
