Thats why I dont care about AI conceptually. It doesn't matter to me that it exists. What matters to me is that the people making it exist and they shouldn't. We dont need to destroy data centers. We need to destroy the landlords that own them.
And thats the heart of Roko's basilisk. The fantasy is that we will create an all powerful intelligence that will destroy anyone that knows of it and does not serve it. The reality is they will create a simulated avatar of their own will and if we let them they'll destroy people for the same reason
And whats worse is that it wont be free of bias or even a reflection of what we collectively believe. None of the AI guys are going to let the machine that thinks for you disagree with what they believe.
Like art creation is just a canary in the coal mine. AI is trying to replace consciousness. These tech guys will tell you that. They WILL create Roko's basilisk, but it will only know what we know. They are willing to sacrifice real life for a machine thats basically a confident trivia guy.
LLM powered search engines are automating the things that could have previously be considered "research" in the most rudimentary sense. Shit, you dont even need to comprehend what you SEE with your eyes. Just point the camera and push the magic button and the machine tells you what you are seeing
You dont need to KNOW anything. You dont even need to know how to spell or read. Just speak the words at the machine and it will speak an answer back. Nevermind the accuracy, it will give an easy answer tailored to you. Googling things allowed us to ignore references, AI now let's us ignore reality
When cell phones became popular and widespread and advanced enough to have a phone book included a lot of people stopped remembering phone numbers. There are kids born without a home phone number that will likely never remember a phone number their whole life.
