ON TOP of the ethical reasons to not use AI, it's also
1) bad at what it does
2) literally makes you stupider
3) has HUGE environmental costs: every search is equivalent to pouring out an entire bottle of water. It's not worth it to generate a cutesy emoji or have it write an error-riddled draft.

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we donβt have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please donβt promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

More stories being erased, today in Magdeburg, Germany. The Stolpersteine, which remember the Jewish families at the homes where they lived before their expulsion and murder by the Nazis, are being stolen. Donations to the www.stolpersteine.eu can help to replace them. #Germanhistory

Zazu Nova at a Gay Liberation Front Meeting, 1970. Photo by Diana Davies / New York Public Library Zazu Nova, a black woman, sits on top of a table at a Gay Liberation Front meeting in 1970. A black bar covers her face with text that reads
"this history has been censored".
Photo: protesters for Women's Suffrage demonstrate in front of the White House in 1917, courtesy of Indiana University. Text reads: National parks preserve the stories of ALL Americans
NPS photo: Liberty Bell with Independence Hall in the background. The metal bell is supported by a wood & metal stand and sits in an airy atrium. The rear wall of the atrium is entirely glass adn looks out upon Independence Hall. Text reads:
Stories of people enslaved by our founding fathers. Native Americans murdered or removed from stolen lands. Black Americans killed because of their skin color.
Industrial workers fighting for labor rights. Women prepared to die for their right to vote. Queer and transgender people committed to LGBTQIA+ justice
Photo: NPS. Civil Rights protesters in Alabama. Text reads: Park Rangers are facing barriers to sharing many of these stories. Across the National Park Service we've seen: webpages removed, exhibits altered, social media posts rejected, and public programs cancelled. This should alarm you. NPS employees pride themselves on providing accurate, well-researched, nonpartisan perspectives on American history.
"DARKNESS CANNOT DRIVE OUT DARKNESS; ONLY LIGHT CAN DO THAT.
HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE; ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT."
We stand committed to accurately portraying American history, with empathy and inclusion and respect and truth and love.
