Looking forward to Life Is Beautiful tonight @tpfilmclub.bsky.social These were the last two I saw there, and Iβm probably risking a lifetime ban by saying I preferred Mustang, but I must speak my truth. Released in 2015, directed by Deniz Gamze Erguven, shot in the Black Sea port Inebolu.

Night Tide film poster
Very belated mention of this, shown @tpfilmclub.bsky.social a few weeks ago. Dennis Hopperβs first starring role, from 1960, directed by Curtis Harrington, and rescued from obscurity by Nicholas Winding Rhen. Shot in Venice Beach, it was marketed as a horror film, but it really isnβt #NightTide

With the protagonist staggering from one unsettling, sometimes bizarre, scene to the next, drawn into the violent extremes of Aussie 'mateship'. The highlight is Donald Pleasence's astonishing performance as a Ballardian renegade doctor, a channel for deviant energies... 2/2
Saw Wake In Fright (finally!) last night @tpfilmclub.bsky.social. A hellish account of one man's descent into lager-fuelled depravity in the outback, it's recently acquired a near legendary rep as a precursor of the Australian new wave. For all that, it's quite a strange film... 1/2

Val Kilmer is undoubtedly impressive as the Lizard King, but Stone's idea of the hero's journey is to depict Morrison as a holy idiot, who basically goes on to become a total idiot. Still, great music, even if The Doors remain peculiarly maligned in the rock canon... 2/2
Saw Oliver Stone's, err, biopic of The Doors last night @tpfilmclub.bsky.social, first time since I originally saw it in 1991. There's some fantastic scenes ie. the recreations of the shows, and some fantastically ludicrous scenes ie. much of the rest of it. Oh, and not much plot 1/2

Here's a v old piece I wrote about how from start to fin, Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's is pretty much a re-write of/homage to Gatsby:

Re-watched The Conversation last night @tpfilmclub.bsky.social, the epitome of a '70s paranoid conspiracy thriller. It's a slow, almost dream-like film, but its twist ending is still terrific, and that final image of Gene Hackman playing sax in his wrecked apartment is one for the ages...
