just from a purely anecdotal perspective this seems flatly untrue. 99% of game developers I know are trying to kill AI with some kind of Large Gun.
HG Demi Barding. It can barely stand with its huge backpack.
Close up view on the chest area where I started the double layer chipping.
HG Demi Barding, some progress. Sponge chipping for initial randomized wear, following up with a fine brush to refine the shapes and add directional scratches.

Been so focused on VFX skills in the past years that basic principles from other disciplines feel new to me. It's nice to step away from that grind for a bit I guess
I originally didn't want to have foliage for this because I wanted it to feel apocalyptic and deserted, but I realized I wanted it after all just cause I needed noisy medium-to-small-sized clutter... Been a lotta baby's first game art realizations here lol
Gamers aren't really in the picture eh, they'll buy whatever plays well. This whole art quality circus feels like it's for everyone but them
Games pick realism cause its cheaper and easier. The pursuit of fidelity is a separate problem lol
Realism comes with a wider hiring pool and less baggage. There's less time spent justifying a style to higher-ups who don't know better, less time spent getting artists to stick to a style, and exponential yields from simulating PBR behavior instead of hand-directing every asset in every condition
Realism as in mimicking the real world is a production choice at its core. It's consistent. Every realistic game asset comes with a fixed recipe. There's set PBR values for every type of surface and reference is plentiful. You don't have to go through the effort of picking and sticking to a 'style'
Graphical fidelity, like detail and resolution and asset quality and all the fancy tech features. That stuff can apply to 'stylized' games too
I don't remember putting those things together :P you must be getting that from somewhere else. Realism makes game art easier if anything, and realism or the lack thereof has relatively little bearing on the successes you mentioned lol
The best studios are gonna want the best guys and the best guys are gonna want to do the best work, and that cycle will perpetuate itself regardless of how much the end consumer cares about the prettiness of their game
I can only get better paying jobs by knowing the latest tech and having worked on the prettiest games. A big part of the pressure on studios to make prettier games is gonna come from people like me, who want a route forward to that end. What fixes that?
A big part of my drive to learn and use higher-tech tools and make prettier, higher fidelity games is just because I wanna earn a house-buying wage someday. What other way up is there? I could try get really fuckn good at pixel art or handpainting but thataway lies no money
