Donate to Rebuild Hope for a Displaced Navajo Family, organized by Marley Shebala Ya’at’eeh Relatives/Frens/Humans, my family & I are still standing but we ne… Marley Shebala needs your support for Rebuild Hope for a Displaced Navajo Family

I always say how I never had a mentor to help me figure out how to be a journalist, but I do have a hero. This woman, who needs know introduction, Marley Shebala, who is probably the best Native journalist ever! She’s a trailblazer. But she has fallen on hard times like many

The New York Phil-hózhǫ́ I vaguely remember the first time I went to a concert. I must have been about 4 years old and my mom dressed me up in this cute little Christmas outfit to watch the Nutcracker Ballet in Flagstaff. …

I went to the NY Phil to hear Leilehua Lanzilotti’s β€œof light and stone” & wrote a reflection about it but don’t let the length scare you bc it’s important to set up why THIS visit to the Phil, marks a transition in the way I approach classical music spaces. natayazhi.wordpress.com/2025/09/21/t...

It was absolutely gorgeous. I hope it gets programmed often.

coming on here to announce I am voluntarily going to hear Bartok tonight but only bc Yunchan Lim is performing and more importantly, it’s programmed alongside Leilehua Lanzilotti’s β€œof light and stone”.

One of the coolest things about living here in the city, is that I have a LIFE Magazine man. A dude who sells on the corner of Broadway & 109 on any given sunny day and I can ask him for whatever ancient edition of LIFE I need and he’ll procure it for me for $15

This was supposed to be their night, their celebration, & you made it all about an Indigenous man’s goof-up instead. When he tried to correct you & clarify the issue, y’all still made it as dramatic as you possibly could. Anyways, review of their works coming soon since y’all can’t be bothered.

30.03.2025 21:36 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

But, go off on the drama I guess. Was it really more important to highlight Andrew’s lack of paperwork (which he clarified was the issue) over the conducting/composer/performer debut of a Cree woman and the compositional debut of an Anishinaabe woman at Carnegie Hall?

30.03.2025 21:31 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

whoever wrote that slipped disc article about Andrew Balfour…that was some insensitive & deeply uncomfortable journalism that had very patriarchal consequences in Indigenous media spaces & begot the opposite of what Andrew intended when he sought to include the voices of Indigenous women composers.

NY Phil w/ Dudamel & Ravel last night at Lincoln Center. Powwow today, down the street with the thunderbird singers. Cree & Anishinaabe choral works tonight at Carnegie Hall.

Also, I’m sorry Mr. NY Phil Percussion Man, but you need to get some swing in your step in the Gershwin bc that β€œswing” was not convincing 😭😭😭

It begs the question, is he hot or does he just conduct with vigor and vivacity?

to everyone who has the hots for gustavo dudamel, I see you nowβ€”I may not feel the same way per se…but I get it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
(I watched him conduct ravel & gershwin up close & personal tonight hahahaha)

begging orchestras to stop programming a Native composer with Dvorak’s NWS. It’s not giving what you think it is and you look CORNY.

Take your SEM proposals elsewhere!! Challenging and exciting music scholarship is not happening at the conference where they let senior scholars harass graduate students & junior scholars.

We are asking the American Choral Directors Association to 1) issue a public statement acknowledging harm caused by platforming Linthicum, 2) Remove Linthicum’s music from resource lists, 3) work w/ Native cultural authorities to develop vetting processes for Indigenous music.

William Linthicum is not Lakota. We have verified with the Rosebud Sioux enrollment office. Linthicum used Lakota song materials that community members & the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Historic Preservation Cultural Resource Management Office have deemed inappropriate & sacrilegious.

On Twitter, I had posted about a composer who took a Lakota ceremonial song & inappropriately turned it into a choral piece. Today, a group of Native music educators, allies, with support from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe’s Historic Preservation Office are calling for the ACDA to take accountability.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Don’t overhaul the entire music curriculum 3 semesters into the music theory lab track by changing to moveable do and then immediately start penalizing students for singing fixed do, like they did during my undergrad lol
