whoever wrote that slipped disc article about Andrew Balfour…that was some insensitive & deeply uncomfortable journalism that had very patriarchal consequences in Indigenous media spaces & begot the opposite of what Andrew intended when he sought to include the voices of Indigenous women composers.

begging orchestras to stop programming a Native composer with Dvorak’s NWS. It’s not giving what you think it is and you look CORNY.

Take your SEM proposals elsewhere!! Challenging and exciting music scholarship is not happening at the conference where they let senior scholars harass graduate students & junior scholars.

We are asking the American Choral Directors Association to 1) issue a public statement acknowledging harm caused by platforming Linthicum, 2) Remove Linthicum’s music from resource lists, 3) work w/ Native cultural authorities to develop vetting processes for Indigenous music.

William Linthicum is not Lakota. We have verified with the Rosebud Sioux enrollment office. Linthicum used Lakota song materials that community members & the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Historic Preservation Cultural Resource Management Office have deemed inappropriate & sacrilegious.

On Twitter, I had posted about a composer who took a Lakota ceremonial song & inappropriately turned it into a choral piece. Today, a group of Native music educators, allies, with support from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe’s Historic Preservation Office are calling for the ACDA to take accountability.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Don’t overhaul the entire music curriculum 3 semesters into the music theory lab track by changing to moveable do and then immediately start penalizing students for singing fixed do, like they did during my undergrad lol
