NEBRASKA CROWD: “TAX THE RICH! TAX THE RICH!”
@USRepMikeFlood: “So your proposal to solve (the debt) is tax the rich?”
NEBRASKA CROWD: *CHEERS WILDLY*
(not sure this went quite as he planned 😬)

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.
Now would be a good time for US academics, and everyone else, to stop being deer in the headlights, and start organising. The traditional institutions are too weak, corrup and scared to help you. You're going to have to this yourselves, like big boys and girls and genderfluids.
It's called a polycrisis bc multiple, unsolvable crises are occurring at once. The rise of the authoritarianism, the climate, planetary boundaries, and financial markets built on speculation, not to mention the inherent contradictions of capitalism. Buckle up, buttercup.
Now I half-heartedly try to justify resources for preservation, much as a salesperson pushes a product they don't believe in. Because who really will benefit from this data? Our future techno-feudalist lords?
The other justification for preservation? The essential march forward, the religion of progress, of growth, of advancement. Ideas we need to rid ourselves of if we ever are to live in balance with nature's metabolism.
I used to think my job was important: preserving history so humanity doesn't repeat mistakes. Oh, the naivete.

I've been talking about this at mpow for weeks now.
Goran World - yesterday As someone who grew up under an authoritarian regime, I can offer one crucial piece of advice: time is everything. If you don’t stand up now—if you don’t protest, resist, disrupt, and refuse to comply—you may lose your country forever. Authoritarianism thrives on silence, hesitation, and fear. The longer people wait, the more entrenched the regime becomes, making resistance exponentially harder. Every moment of inaction is a moment the regime uses to tighten its grip. History has shown that those who act early have the best chance of reclaiming their freedom. The time to fight back is now.

My response, to myself and others who are STILL wishfully praying that universities will stand up for us, for science, for knowledge, for democracy, despite knowing FULL WELL that they've spent all their resources the past few decades converting these universities into ROI-driven businesses:
