BehaveAI turns patterns of movement into false colours that reveal an object or limb’s direction, speed and acceleration in a single frame, making it easy for deep learning neural nets to track objects and classify their behaviour. This demonstration shows a herring gull (Larus argentatus) taking off, with its most recent movements shown in blue, while green and red show its movements further back in time. Moth perched on a streetlamp. Our work suggests that light suppresses activity in moths, so once attracted to a light they are prevented from escape.

Eye-opening findings on how light suppresses moth activity. Light attracts moths, but what if we've been missing a much more pervasive effect where even sky-glow light levels make them freeze?

Moths’ attraction to artificial light, such as streetlights, is common knowledge and has been much studied. But, as many people will have observed, and now new research shows, moths may also remain still if they land near a light, apparently β€œtrapped”. ex.ac.uk/dYy

An ecosystem approach is the only way to halt the vanishing of UK wildlife.

Our latest report with @nationaltrust.org.uk, led by @pettorelli.bsky.social, makes clear that human wellbeing is underpinned by ecosystems continuing to function in a resilient way.

Plans to weaken protections for national parks will have β€˜disastrous consequences’ say green groups Exclusive: Letter from 170-plus organisations calls on government to drop proposed changes to planning law

The British public love National Parks & Landscapes.

Weakening the law that protects them would be devastating for nature, visitors & the businesses they support.

These places need more support from Gov't to make them wilder & more accessible to everyone πŸ‘‡

Thanks to UK leadership, a global 30x30 target was adopted at COP15 in 2022 as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

But last year, the Government appeared to be sleepwalking with only 3% of land in England effectively protected. Today, we are moonwalking at just 2.8%.

Extinction of experience among ecologists Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology are under multiple threats and are progressively declining. We call for greater attention to this ongoing loss of direct field experience within the ecology community, as it could have widespread consequences for science and education, ultimately hindering efforts to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis.
