Interesting read; a lot to process. I also spend a lot of time with π¦call recordings - mostly for wind development. I'd like to think the bats are happy to be recorded, since the objective is to mitigate their deaths and loss of their habitat.

I "left" almost 2 years ago to become an en environmental consultant. It was a tough decision and I felt like I failed and lost part of my identity. I really struggled with accepting my new role. I still miss doing research, so I find extracurricular ways to be involved

@emmaillustrate.bsky.social got my beautiful ornaments yesterday π after the postal strike delay. No matter...they will be up year-round. π¦
Love this innovation. Would love to see the grant proposal detailing this! Haha
Willful ignorance
Interesting. I'm aware of fences causing mortality and bottlenecks. I hadn't considered the effects on survival and reproductive success due to increased energetic costs.
That's why I left environmental consulting out there. All my work was in the Oil Sands and I felt like we were just checking boxes. It really didn't matter. The final straw was when my Director got mad when SARA was passed.
And don't pin their arms back...I and many Canadian bat practitioners put out a guide to handling bats to ensure their welfare. We've learned a lot collectively over the years about better practices and techniques that should no longer be used.

In principle, this would be great. In practice, I don't see it working here in Hali. I see compliance being a huge issue. Our neighbours still refuse to separate properly; can't see them putting a bin out in the proper orientation. Partially automated might work though.
Darn. I was hoping to get away from AI nonsense over here. Could you please at least flag AI content...it can be deceiving
Hey bluesky fam..I'm new to this platform - is there a bat starter pack out there?
Yep. Same in Atlantic Canada. Even here in Halifax, where we get a lot of rain.
When I moved there from NB to do my MSc, I couldn't believe their approach to snow removal.
We used visit Stuart and Beth when I was growing up. Beth was my Granddad's neice. Very kind people.
