I'd agree. There's enough dregs of Presbyterianism in Scottish culture to make it slightly less pronounced up here. Although as a working class PhD student of mine described, you're still the crab in the bucket when you get yourself educated

I think there's an inherent anti-intellectualism in British culture against being educated. If you're working class, you're getting above yourself; if you're rich your education should be narrow and train you to be a leader. I think it's why the OU was dismissed as a housewives uni in its early days

The return of Grammar schools made *some* sense as a populist policy 30 years ago, when parents could remember what they were like as some of them went to grammar schools. It makes NO SENSE now that virtually all parents went to comprehensive schools

That's the thing with Reform - they're a party made up of the group that used to be the fringe of the Tory party, where when they advocated stupid things like this, the sensible Tories then said "that's stupid and electorally unpopular" and ignored it

As someone who's very pisky adjacent, GAFCON can just fuck off. The liberals in the Global Anglican Communion have spent decades trying to appease them and, sorry, the whole point of the church is it has no dogma

yeah. My PhD co-author in this one did some research for journals, so we're hoping it will land more positively at the next one. But we shouldn't have to do this?!

Looking afresh at these reviewers' comments on our paper on trans disabled people, it's even more obvious that the paper was rejected because of transphobia

There's probably an interesting wee critical policy analysis to be done on Dame Louise Caseyism and English public policy

Restoring order at the border speaks to Labour values. Without that, we won’t be able to do anything else at all | Shabana Mahmood Our approach, unlike that of the Greens and Reform, is in step with the British people. They don’t want extremes – they want a system that is managed and fair, says home secretary Shabana Mahmood

Proper pant gnomes logic here.

I didn't know about the proposed changes to student visas. That'll have an interesting impact on university admissions 😬

Democracy Volunteers β€˜Family Voting’ and how to prevent it in Future Elections Democracy Volunteers has been observing elections in the UK for 10 years. We have seen β€˜family voting’ across the UK and we think it is important to explain more about it and how it should be possi…

I've been asking Democracy Volunteers, the organisation who said they saw family voting in the Gorton and Denton by-election, if they would give details about evidence or methodology. They have now released an updated statement - which is still quite vague.
