A common byproduct of agriculture, nitrous oxide (N2O) has been responsible for around 10% of global warming since the Industrial Revolution.

We’ve calculated that genetically modified plants could stop the increase in atmospheric nitrous oxide and reduce levels to pre-industrial by the end of the century. Impossible? Let’s try the research and see. youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

Our proposed bio technology could prevent N2O emissions and remove legacy nitrous oxide from the atmosphere, but it was rejected by USDA and DOE. Why because it was deemed too difficult. youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

it is critical to preserve carbon-rich ecosystems like peatlands, old-growth forests, wetlands, and mangroves, which together hold at least 260 Gt of 'irrecoverable' carbon12. On the other hand, negative emission technologies can offset excess GHG emissions10, and natural climate solutions such as SOC restoration can play a crucial role in this process, while also offering additional benefits such as biodiversity conservation13-15. SOC preservation and restoration alone can contribute up to 25% of the potential of natural climate solutions, with 40% of this potential coming from SOC preservation and 60% from the restoration of depleted SOC stocks16.

Contrary to the regenerative ranching racquet, this meta-analysis further adds to the consensus:

Natural ecosystems contain more stable soil carbon stores than even the best agricultural land, and their preservation (& restoration as best as possible) is therefore crucial.

GMO plants expressing nitrous oxide, reductase and their mitochondria could stop soil emissions 100% and remove a lot of atmospheric nitro oxide. youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

Sorry, all livestock ag drives climate change: methane, nitrous oxide & CO2 emissions + 'carbon opportunity costs" on all the land used, that could otherwise store more carbon. So-called regen grazing (no agreed definition) can often be the worst, with much greenwash. E.g.: bsky.app/profile/nich...

Since nitrous oxide lifetime in the atmosphere is about 200 years, most of the old nitrous oxide is still up there. Only one method can prevent emissions and remove nitrous oxide from the atmosphere: youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

If we could get plants to express nitrous oxide reductase there leaves could take up nitrous oxide from the atmosphere, no matter what the source. youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

How to prevent nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture

I am not aware that small engines produce nitrous oxide. I think you’re confusing it with NOX/NO2. Nitrous oxide is emitted from lawns that are fertilized. maybe we can invent a grass that can degrade nitrous oxide. Would you buy one? youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

So let’s eliminate agricultural nitrous oxide, emissions. Radical thinking, but DOE and USDA don’t do that. Here’s how: youtu.be/vHZZfKukT4M

Eunice Newton Foote The Hidden Legacy of the Woman who Discovered Greenhouse Gases

The science showing that CO2 absorbs heat, and that fossil fuels could warm the earth, was made by a great scientist, Eunice Newton Foote, who published her work in 1856. The subsequent science follows her pioneering work and insights.

Don’t think enough people appreciate fact that all power plants that run on fossil fuels (& nuclear fuels) are just very big tea kettles.

Only Q is whether you can boil the water more efficiently. Still boiling water.

I’d like more than water boiling tech in the future.

Had a great time talking about my work at #AMS2025 this morning where I discussed the impacts of the stratosphere on the climate system using satellite observations of nitrous oxide (N2O)!

Should greenhouse gases, other than CO2 count as offsets even though they don’t reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere? For instance, plant expression of nitrous oxide reductase could reduce global warming for years, but we still have the same amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

11.01.2025 02:51 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

So what do we know about the ultimate remaining non-decarbonized sources of greenhouse gases? Statistics says 2T euros in the 2030s! That is based on the overpriced offsets on the present market, but perhaps it is a rough estimate of the eventual difficult to decarbonize market

09.01.2025 07:37 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

If we can get nitrous oxide reductase to work and plants the uptake from the atmosphere through the leaves will surpass even the root uptake making it accessible to degradation the legacy nitrous oxide in the atmosphere from other processes.

By the end of the century, it looks to me as if the greatest concentration of capital will be in carbon offsets. Trillions of dollars. Only sustainable if they are our rigorous and confirmable.
