Reminds me of a statement by Min Jin Lee in a podcast when she says βgrowth is sexy,β itβs hot, and she wants no part of the smug bastards who refuse it and think they donβt need it. You canβt grow without struggle.

This so accurately describes every facet of our current moment, education included
As I keep saying, the Epstein story is an offshore finance story.
And offshore finance is about elite impunity: insistence on their wealth and their persons being protected by the law, but never being subject to the law.
It's the "Every man a King" fantasy made real.

All the buzz about Emerald Fennell's Wuthering H, & Elordi's Heathcliff makes me wonder why nobody has as yet mentioned "Dude Watching with the Brontes" (by the brilliant @katebeaton.bsky.social, who has long since anticipated all we mere mortals have to say):

I remember reading about these labor conditions in Orwellβs Roses, a truly excellent book. Yes: buy your beloved a book for tomorrow and maybe pick them some flowers.
Itβs not a withdrawal until ICE is abolished.
I have neighbors everywhere.
Like 75% of the US Olympic curlers are from Minnesota. A lot of them curl out of two clubs in Saint Paul, one club is in Frogtown, a neighborhood that has been very heavily targeted by ICE. These curlers are good neighbors.

Academics vying for a spot in Epsteinβs world. There are so many. I feel the need to make a thread, so I donβt keep confusing them. 1/
We just saw this, and itβs a good idea for businesses to post. Private businesses are allowed to set dress and conduct rules. Requiring no full face coverings has long been standard for safety and loss prevention reasons, and it is within a businessβs rights to refuse entry or service.
I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

When you stick the history of slave catchers in a blender with witch hunts, the Red Scare, and modern police brutality you get these images. Wild idea I know, but maybe we don't keep using sanitized language for the horrors unfolding in front of us. Maybe we speak truth to power...
Yeah, this is bad. This is what happens when faculty are excluded from search committees. Trustees erode academic quality from consideration.
Heartbreaking
Feels like a good time to repost this. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg's checklist of things to do that aren't protesting or voting.
LETS GO. No apostrophe.
Do @jessicawluther.com and @amirarose.bsky.social have more #HeatedRivalry thoughts? DUH. Here they are discussing why it matters that HR is a sports romance, why the hockey matters.

This is a good thing, however, itβs far from a complete solution. π§΅

Started reading through The Campus Crisis Toolkit and even in the intro I love where it's going. This turn towards practical advice for people on the front lines of the university omnicrisis - specifically name checking staff and students too! - is a wonderful to see. Looking forward to teaching it!

I remember a girl I smoked with at Anthrocon one year say "fascism is predisposed to happen when a lot of rich white men are about to go to jail" and I never saw a better demonstration of it than this
Letβs say you had the opportunity to assign college students *1* thing (article, video, podcast) to help them understand what edtech is, how itβs funded, who benefits from it, and how it preys on their data. What hits these bases in a comprehensive, up-to-date, and powerful way?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
