Loren Hart grew up on these streets. He became a Jersey City firefighter and spent 23 years rising through the ranks β protecting his neighbors, his community, his home.
Today, he takes on a new role leading our public safety operation. Jersey City takes care of its own.
When duty called, JCFD was there.
Great reporting from News12 on last weekends rescue.

"Governor Sherrill is showing true, community-led leadership." β Mayors Solomon & Baraka
This is what happens when communities organize, coalition-build, and refuse to back down. A smarter transportation policy. A healthier future. A win for the people of New Jersey.
For years, residents fought against a plan that would have flooded neighborhoods already overburdened with traffic and air pollution. Today, that fight paid off.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mayors Ras Baraka and James Solomon Release Statement Praising Governor Sherrillβs Decision on Newark Bay Bridge NEWARK & JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 3, 2026) β Mayors James Solomon and Ras Baraka today released the following statement regarding Governor Mikie Sherrillβs decision to revise the proposed Newark Bay Bridge expansion and instead announced a plan that simply replaces the existing infrastructure: βGovernor Sherrill is showing true, community-led leadership. Todayβs decision acknowledges that the previous proposal wouldβve opened the floodgates of heavy traffic through communities that already bear a high burden of traffic and air pollution. For years, our communities fought against a seriously ill-conceived plan while proposing serious alternatives. It took Governor Sherrillβs leadership to listen and act in the best interest of the people of New Jersey. The Governorβs announcement is a major step in the direction of smart transportation policy that upgrades aging infrastructure, while addressing the needs of impacted communities. For years, dedicated community activists have campaigned for this reasonable solution. This win for our community is a testament to their hard work of building a coalition across the region. In the end, Governor Sherrill made the right choice for the future of our cities, the environment, and for the economic future of New Jersey. Both of us sincerely thank Governor for her leadership.β ###
Mayors Ras Baraka & James Solomon are applauding Governor Mikie Sherrill's decision to scrap the Newark Bay Bridge expansion β and instead simply replace the existing infrastructure.
No injuries. Mission complete.
This is what years of technical rescue training looks like in action. Jersey City firefighters are ready β day or night, rain or shine, 60 feet underground or above the skyline.
With the car stalled at mid-shaft and mechanical efforts unsuccessful, our crews deployed a high-angle rescue operation β lowering trained rescue firefighters into the shaft, securing the occupants in harnesses, and raising them safely to the upper level.
Saturday night, members of Rescue 1 and Squad 4 responded to Congress Street Light Rail Station where two people were trapped 60 feet down an elevator shaft for over two hours.
Affordable housing is a much more effective use of a PILOT/tax abatement than a satellite of a foreign museum. Glad to see KRE and the administration collaborate on a win-win for the developer and the city.
Officially adopting Jersey Fortress
When the old plan stopped making sense, we found a better one.
This is what is possible when the city and developers work together with residents in mind.

HRH committed to providing long-term, high-quality health care in the Heights, and an additional two weeks fails to fulfill that promise. Together β as the Mayor and members of the City Council β we will continue to work closely with Governor Sherrill, the NJ Department of Health, and Jersey Cityβs Health and Human Services to find a responsible path towards a solution that guarantees access to emergency care for residents in the Heights, whether that care is provided by HRH or another provider.β

Jersey City deserves a government as good as its people. Weβre going to keep working towards that goal.
Thatβs the standard weβre holding ourselves to: not perfection, but constant improvement. In snow ops, and in everything we do.
To our residents: thank you for your patience. We heard your frustrations after the last storm. We took notes. We incorporated real learnings, and while this one wasnβt perfect, it was a lot better.
I want to say thank you to every Public Works crew member, MUA worker, police officer, fire fighter, and city employee who worked through that night (and the night after that): Jersey City sees your hard work and appreciates you.
We believe Blizzard 2026 was one of the ten biggest snow storms in Jersey Cityβs recorded history. Our crews will be out overnight finishing their roadway clean-up. Tomorrow, weβll expand our efforts to clear crosswalks and more.
We're all in this together. Our crews are doing their partβnow we need you to do yours.

REPORT VIOLATIONS
If a property near you has not cleared their sidewalk or corner, call the Resident Response Center at (201) 547-4900.We will dispatch inspectors and levy fines and summonses.
DO NOT SHOVEL SNOW INTO THE STREET
Shoveling snow into the street is illegal and you will be fined. It creates ice, slows our crews, and puts everyone at risk. Keep snow on your side of the curb.
PROPERTY OWNERS: CLEAR YOUR SIDEWALKS NOW
Every property owner, landlord, and business is legally required to clear:
β
Sidewalks (48 inches wide)
β
Corners and corner ramps
β
Crosswalks up to the plow line
This isn't optionalβit's the law.
Labor crews are also out across the city helping clear corners and crosswalks.
I'm proud of the work our teams are doingβbut we need your help too.
OUR CREWS ARE WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK
Our DPW teams have been out all night maintaining blacktop on main streets and pushing through residential streets. Right now, we're bringing on specialized equipment to get through smaller streets that need extra attention.
Jersey City, I want to give you an update on where we are with snow removal and what we need from you.
