Honestly I think the deep retro system knowledge has always been really hard to obtain. When most of it was relevant, the internet didn't/barely existed, and everything was behind NDAs. Even when I got into doing Gameboy dev in the late 90s, most of the stuff was in IRC and newsgroups.
If that's the case and you're serious, do some mentoring! Give them guidance on making their own folio pieces or games they could use in a folio! That's way less exploitative than an unpaid internship.
