Why Seeing Still Matters in Biology - the Node or, Why all biologists needs data visualization Biology probes form and function of Life. Form is easy to grasp: cells under a microscope, subcellular

'Visuals expose batch effects, hidden subpopulations, nonlinear behaviors, and experimental artifacts that often remain invisible to summary statistics alone. These insights directly shape which data can be trusted, which controls are needed, and which experiments should come next.'

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧡

Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

A video of Alex Pretti reading out the final salute of an unnamed veteran he cared for until the end of his life in the ICU, posted to Facebook by his son.

Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.

White. Hot. Rage.

Bleeding, Battered But Mlot-Mroz Wrong Minority
By Henry J. Taylor
It would be nice if Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy paid a hospital visit to patriot Joseph Mlot-Mroz, mercilessly stabbed, beaten and bludgeoned in Boston outside the headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference while peacefully demonstrating against its Poor People's March on Washington.
One of Mlot-Mroz's signs read: "For God, Freedom and Country. Fight Com-, munism in Vietnam and Red Stooges at Home." His other proclaimed: "I am fighting poverty. I work! Have you tried it? It works!"
Cut up and bleeding under the wild attack in the first violence of the trek on Washington, Mlot-Mroz looked, in vain, for help.
From Bobby Kennedy's first day as Attorney General he has been probably the nation's No. 1 sponsor of demonstrations. What's the matter with encouraging Mlot-Mroz? Apparently that's quite different.

This MLK Day I'm going to tell a story from May 1968 when a right wing provocateur got the nation talking about how "white conservative Christians" like him were reguularly victimized by Black/leftist mobs while the "liberal elite" looked the other way. The story was a lie, & the "victim" was a Nazi

So not just blebbing, but productive blebbing. blebz on a mission. I also like the connotation to organelles

I always wonder if we should we rename "bleb signaling" to something catchier...

In the 50s Costero and Pomerat called blebbing "zeiosis" from the greek root for boiling (which I guess never caught on though I've always liked it). Maybe we add "orgo-" meaning work/productive, making "orgozeiosis"?

A dividing budding yeast cell in steel, bronze, and silver, with apatite gemstones for the chromosomes. The sculpture rests in my hand, a physical cutaway view with many cellular structures visible.

Closeup of the sculpture, centered on the spindle pole body, a tiny structure looking like a stack of pancakes from the side, embedded in the long curved nuclear membrane, tethering the spindle (a splayed bundle of silver branches each terminating in a jewel chromosome). The spindle structure is polished silver, lodged in the polished bronze of the membranes and surrounded by bronze endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and other structures.

A favorite commission this year, a dividing cell with an extra detail. Colleagues of a retiring researcher commissioned me to add the specific structure she worked onβ€”the spindle pole bodyβ€”to the sculpture. Here it is close up, in sterling silver embedded in the bronze nuclear membrane. πŸ”¬#SciArt
