I would never tell an inuit person to eat a plant-based diet. And if your life depends on a drug derived from animals, by all means take it!

But I bet that if you could, you'd also be more than willing to avoid animal products. My message goes for everyone who can but just doesn't want to.

The definition that I like to use for veganism states "to exclude animal products *as far as practicable and possible*"

And I like that because I know that in real life not everyone can be 100% vegan.

You are absolutely right: food waste is a huge issue and we should make it a priority! But thankfully we can walk and chew gum at the same time! And one way of reducing food waste throughout the system is shifting to a plant-based diet.

...because throwing away meat, eggs, dairy is a double waste: it is not only throwing away those calories but also all of the grain and feed that the animal ate to make those products.

Throwing out 100 kcal of steak is also throwing out 2500 kcal of soymeal and grains (that could be eaten by us!)

But it does matter, though! Because (as you hint at) most food waste occurs before the food is in the table. It is the crops that are left in the field because it is unprofitable to harvest them, or due to improper storage or transport. But most of all, it comes from animal products...
