Met an interesting local artist, @grammaticas.bsky.social, at a talk I gave last night about "The White Pedestal." She has a post on her substack that defamiliarizes some of the women we see in sculpture (e.g. around NYC) by telling their stories. grammaticas.substack.com/p/5-of-monum...
I went on @thisguysucked.com expecting fun snark and hot takes. It did not disappoint, but even better was seeing how deeply @ceaubin.com cares about history. She's a hater, yes, but what she's really focused on is how the significance we give history depends on the way we study it. Great show
Peloponnesian is mine
I've admired @kevinsolez.bsky.social since he contributed expertise on Homer to Pharos when we were writing about the casting of David Gyasi to play Achilles. He's now hosting expert guests, including @sentantiq.bsky.social, at his "Homer Hotline" on YouTube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=C30u...
My review essay on recent and forthcoming work by scholars whose earlier work inspired and informed "The White Pedestal" is out in this week's Pasts Imperfect. Very pleased to have it appear in a publication where "antiquity" means much more than Greece and Rome
You guys I am such a sucker for the chosen one trope so my judgment may be clouded but my daughter and I just finished She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and that show is so good. And, it's hard not to think of the people standing up to ICE violence www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACsi...
The medal wants to be found
He could be like that in class too
e.g. in the general obituary it noted they had to have his piano rebuilt because he played it so hard lol
Not that gentle in my experience but definitely enjoyable company
My teacher the classical scholar Jim Tatum died about a week ago. I wrote a reminiscence substack.com/home/post/p-...
I wrote about the Texas A&M Plato case for @pghreviewofbooks.bsky.social ... when they say they're going to offer many courses on Plato this term and in the future, I believe them
Where else can you hear a heavy hitter like @samagbamu.bsky.social, reflect on pedagogy, encounter queer/trans theory, interrogate the relationship of text/material culture, learn abt the experiences of marginalized practitioners, and think abt reception all in 1 day, from the comfort of your home
ResDiff, now in its 7th (!) year is always such a great gathering and I've often thought the stated focus on inequity in Classics, while certainly an impt link between presentations, somewhat understates the range of types of interventions you'll hear. Honored to be part of yet another great lineup
Historians of ancient slavery often turn to narratives of more recently enslaved people to fill in gaps/confirm implications in fragmentary ancient evidence. This seems like an example where ancient sources, which explicitly describe the sexual exploitation of enslaved men, illuminate the modern
"The White Pedestal" quoted at @literaryhub.bsky.social on why contemporary fascism fetishizes the classics
I wonder who is meant in this line "Indeed, the departmentβs approach ranges from generally to rabidly anti-foundational"
Latinists unite
@katjariedel.bsky.social I didn't see this Classical Scholar (already notorious) on your list, sorry for the tag if you already have him
The book is getting a lot of interest. Thanks! Is there a link to the historical accuracy piece I could share?
Yes there's something unhinged about Rufo criticizing Scandinavians but it also repackages the White Nationalist thinking that the (allegedly) superior empathy/liberality of white ppl leads to their extinction. All part of the "which way western man" rhetoric pharos.vassarspaces.net/2025/04/25/e...
If you're curious about my work on white nationalism and Greco-Roman antiquity there's now an excerpt at @pghreviewofbooks.bsky.social. If it speaks to you you can use promo code AIA26 for 30% off and free shipping from @yalepress.bsky.social yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300...
My latest interview is with @areidross.bsky.social on @franetwork.bsky.social 's "Right Rising" rightrising.fireside.fm/65
I've admired @areidross.bsky.social and his "Against the Fascist Creep" for a long time so it was a real honor to talk with him for the @franetwork.bsky.social podcast "Right Rising" about "The White Pedestal."
I've been wondering about how to show solidarity against ICE and I just reposted (doesn't allow quote posts) a guy who's part of the collective that sends 3D printed whistles to areas under siege. Apparently Megyn Kelly is annoyed and I was like well then, take my money. See his linktree to help!
They're not just "ignoring" the humanities they're hostile to them. Great piece by @illdottore.bsky.social (the first one in this issue of Pasts Imperfect) pasts-imperfect.ghost.io/pasts-imperf...
And @karenhunter.bsky.social interviewed me on her Sirius XM program and recently posted it to YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo_s...
@karenhunter.bsky.social interviewed me on her @urbanviewradio.bsky.social program a couple weeks ago and has now put the video on youtube. Great, challenging interview about "The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo_s...
