People and large mammals are known to coppice hazel etc, but they're not essential to the process. Hazel can self-coppice in 2 ways: first, the big old stems simply fall over, and new growth emerges to replace them. 1/2

Wolves. Love. Blueberries.
As much as 83% of a wolf's calories in summer months comes from eating berries.
6) Britain (and Ireland) is an island, we have unique species and unique species interactions, continentalising our biota could lead to net unique biodiversity loss. Yes there are lots of alien species here already, no that is not a justification to add some more 20/

How much temperate rainforest could there be in the UK and Ireland, and where? Despite campaigns calling for restoration in both countries, these questions have been difficult to answer. In our new paper we assess the evidence base ππ§ͺππ³π² 1/9

Very pleased to share #OpenAccess paper, which we think is important to understand woodland bird declines and impact of forestry on native ancient woodland in Britain.

New site record of Hymenophyllum tunbrigense for Co. Louth (H31) growing in a rocky woodland on a minor hill. Happy to find this one today. A very scarce species in the county.

I am really looking forward to the new radio documentary being aired at 3.00pm today, Monday 27th Oct, on RTΓ Radio1. The βSilent Valley - the last Irish Ring Ouzelsβ, it examines the plight of our Ring Ouzels (down to just one known pair in 2024) and asks if they can be saved?

I have so much respect for Greta Thunberg because she easily could have coasted on speaking gigs and Davos appearances for the rest of her life
Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

Aspen, restricted to just two islands on the lough. Haven't recorded it on any other lough islands but occurs very sparingly on some mainland coastal cliff sites.
Yew berry.
Rock Whitebeam with Derryclare conifer plantation and hill in the background. The species seems to favour the western, more exposed sides of islands. Probably doesn't tolerate too much shading from bigger trees but as a result is often quite wind-burnt and stunted.
Mature Yew tree. Red Deer are starting to have a negative effect on vegetation structure and tree regeneration. They happily swim out to these little oasises for shelter and productive feeding.
Nice day out on the islands of Derryclare Lough on Tuesday. We were out to collect Yew berries & cuttings for propagation for further planting locally. We were also hoping to collect some Rock Whitebeam berries as well but didn't find any unfortunately. Quite a rare species away from Killarney.
Sequoia sempervirens (Coast redwood) resprouting epicormically after a high-intensity fire
Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) with a fire scar in the base from a surface fire
Sequoia sempervirens (redwood; world's tallest tree) is well adapted to high-intensity crown fires (eg 2020), but Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia; world's most massive tree) is adapted to surface fires only!

UK is well on course for losing Willow Tit, Spotted Flycatcher & Wood Warbler as breeding species in our lifetime. Wood Warbler already virtually gone from England. I think Willow Tit would be first extinction of a resident bird since Capercaillie in 1700s or White-tailed Eagle in 1918. #ornithology
