This was fun to record! We discuss Murdoch's early 1950s contributions to the philosophy of mind, Gilbert Ryle, and themes of privacy, interiority, "the real", and individuality in her work.

I miss the good old days when taking a sick day just meant getting someone to cover my shift at the restaurant.
There's no one to cover my shift at the philosophy factory.

Have philosophers written about fun? Not pleasure, play, or humour-- but having fun, finding fun, doing things just for fun. My search only turned up 2 sources (McKee, Chakrabarti)

I've written a bit about Murdoch and love (open access!) where I argue she makes humanity rather than personhood central--also, Bridget Clarke's recent Cambridge Elements has some great discussions of the value of the individual in Murdoch (was OA, but sadly just got paywalled!)

Philosophers are sommeliers of language. I spend so much of my days mulling over words, taste-testing synonyms, assessing pairings of concepts and qualifying phrases, etc.

(Collingwood was right that philosophical clarity is served when we "go to school with the poets").

Exciting news! This free to download text does a wonderful job exploring @irismurdoch.bsky.social 's views on the value of the individual as a commitment to the spirit (rather than the dominant post-WII form) of Liberalism

Iris Murdoch: the virtue of paying attention – Irish Philosophy "There is, of course, such a thing as Irish intellectual thought"

Never has the importance of seeing reality as it really is been more important, For Iris Murdoch, "goodness is connected with the attempt to see the unself, to see and to respond to the real world"

Less drastic, but I recently had all uses of the word "verses" (in a discussion of song lyrics) replaced with "vs."; I missed one and it's now in the published article :S

I thoroughly enjoyed talking about Iris Murdoch (and my recent book on her early philosophical writings) with Christopher Satoor from The Young Idealist (who's in the midst of a series of similar videos on the life and work of women in the history of philosophy!)

My phd supervisor once told me to stop writing to preempt attacks from imagined interlocutors so dense and uncharitable they could barely be credited with reading. It was liberating.

Henri Bergson died on this day 1941. He died in Nazi occupied Paris from pneumonia he contracted waiting in line in the cold to register as Jewish. In the weeks after he passed, strange details about his final moments started emerging🧡

Important research for a WIP paper on fun aunties: reconnecting with my own childhood fun auntie, Barb (and her funny hairless cat). A bit less dancing to the Beach Boys than when I was a kid (and quite a lot more wine)
