This was fun to record! We discuss Murdoch's early 1950s contributions to the philosophy of mind, Gilbert Ryle, and themes of privacy, interiority, "the real", and individuality in her work.

I've written a bit about Murdoch and love (open access!) where I argue she makes humanity rather than personhood central--also, Bridget Clarke's recent Cambridge Elements has some great discussions of the value of the individual in Murdoch (was OA, but sadly just got paywalled!)
Philosophers are sommeliers of language. I spend so much of my days mulling over words, taste-testing synonyms, assessing pairings of concepts and qualifying phrases, etc.
(Collingwood was right that philosophical clarity is served when we "go to school with the poets").

My phd supervisor once told me to stop writing to preempt attacks from imagined interlocutors so dense and uncharitable they could barely be credited with reading. It was liberating.
