The ICOS OTC pCO2 instrument intercomparison
In 2021, the Ocean Thematic Centre of the European Research Infrastructure “Integrated Carbon Observation System” conducted an international partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) instrument inter...
Must read paper on pCO₂ measurements, especially for MRV of mCDR. Some key points:
Equilibrator-based instruments require more expertise but give much better results.
For membrane/in situ instruments, you could get significantly different results from instruments from the same manufacturer. 🙀🌊

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Geomitigation of Greenhouse Gases
@eth-eaps.bsky.social is looking for an assistant professor to work on CO₂ removal (CDR). They say greenhouse gas but I don’t think we’re removing atmospheric CH₄ or N₂O. Lots of great people at ETH. Do apply by the end of this month! 🌊🧪

The image depicts a phase diagram illustrating the relationship between total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon in aquatic systems. Key processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and CaCO₃ formation and dissolution are labeled, with arrows indicating the directions of alkalinity addition.
For those who are not marine chemists, this is the easiest way to see how adding alkalinity to the ocean lowers pCO₂ without changing dissolved inorganic carbon and potentially allows the ocean to take up more atmospheric CO₂. 🌊

A picture of the earth showing the pacific ocean. You can see hawaii and New Zealand. Also the edge of antarctica, australia, and north and south america...but barely.
It’s interesting that the emojis show the earth from three angles 🌎 🌍 🌏 but not the fourth.
Though 🔵 is a fair approximation of what it would look like.
People underestimate the Pacific.

A cartoon depicting a person (labeled “us”) poking an illustrated green dragon labeled "ANGRY BEAST" with a stick. The quote from Wally Broecker, "Climate is an angry beast and we are poking at it with sticks," is included at the top.
Today, Wally Broecker would have been 93. He was obsessed with abrupt climate change that arrives suddenly and dramatically.
He likened the climate system to an "angry beast", and said we shouldn't poke it (i.e., keep emitting CO₂) because we don't know how and when it'll react.
We should listen.

Progression of ocean interior acidification over the industrial era
The rapid downward progression of anthropogenic carbon accelerates ocean interior acidification and threatens marine biota.
Ocean Acidification is reshaping life and biogeochemical cycles.
In our latest study, Niki Gruber and I reconstructed its progression in the global ocean interior over the industrial era, based on our previous estimates of anthropogenic carbon accumulation.

Even if CO₂ emissions decreased as much as it did during COVID every year until 2030, we would still miss the 1.5°C target (emissions of 20 GtCO₂/yr by 2023) by a lot.

Ocean liming effects on dissolved organic matter dynamics
Abstract. Ocean liming has gained attention as a potential solution to mitigate climate change by actively removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The addition of hydrated lime to oceanic s...
I've been fighting ocean tech bros calling the stripping of CO₂ from seawater "Direct Ocean Capture (DOC)", just because it sounds like Direct Air Capture. Call it Direct Ocean Removal (DOR) because DOC is dissolved organic carbon to oceanographers.
Here's an article about mCDR and the real DOC. 🌊

Nearly all developed countries report all their forests as 'managed', which means they report all carbon uptake in forests even if it was caused by climate change (CO2 fertilisation). Is this a problem?

How long does CO₂ have to be stored in #CarbonDioxideRemoval #CDR? At least 35 years? 100 years? Longer?🤔
In a new study, @hausfath.bsky.social, @retoknutti.bsky.social & I find that for #netzero CO₂, anything less than 1000 years is not enough to neutralize warming.🧵
