Our findings show how decentralized governance can support the sustainable use of common goods.
Potential applications range from digital infrastructure & other socio-tech commons, to ecological insights on dispersal over natural resources, e.g. foraging land.

Results of simulation of a population of 1,000 users using a WSLS strategy. Mobile user distribution over three servers and the failure rate fall into ideal values, because mobile users adapt their tolerance to failures.
We combine a general theoretical analysis with an applied case study on mobile users accessing Internet services.
This strategy and its extensions prevent overuse and ensure a balanced distribution of resources, even in hybrid populations and under dynamic conditions.

In this paper, we explore a simple, decentralized, and self-interested strategy for individuals with access to multiple commons:
- Use a resource while satisfied, shift to another one when dissatisfied.
Inspired from the Win-Stay, Lose-Shift principle, it balances usage across available options.

Common goods are shared resources whose use by some reduces availability or quality for others -- from groundwater and land to transport and digital infrastructure.
How we govern them is central to todayโs social, economic, and environmental challenges.
๐จ Can individual behavior enable the sustainable use of common goods (with no central policies)? ๐จ
We explore this question in our PNAS Nexus paper:
โSelf-organization of common good usage and an application to Internet servicesโ

Join NetPlace seminar this Thursday at 5pm CET (4pm London) to hear @elenacandellone.bsky.social's work on โMapping extreme users through negative ties in online social interactions"!
At NetPlace, we try to build spaces for junior researchers to come together to learn from each other and develop their craft. Our seminar series does just this, integrating the sharing of scientific knowledge and discussion about the process of science. We hope Ph.D. students from complex systems, network science, and interdisciplinary research in general will join us for a monthly talk and discussion. Elena Candellone (Thursday, Oct. 2) Louis Boucherie (Thursday, Nov. 6) Haily Merritt (Thursday, Dec. 4)
Weโre excited to announce the line-up for our fall seminar series! We have three awesome speakers who will share their research and perspectives on the craft of science.
This follows the call published in the Lancet for all professional and academic associations to โbreak the selective silence on the genocide in Gazaโ and fulfil their moral responsibility by speaking out.
Find the call here and support it by signing their petition:

This is a call for the Complex Systems Society to stand with other academic organizations and publicly condemn the ongoing genocide in Gaza ๐ต๐ธ

It was my pleasure to kick off the AMETHYST satellite! What a great crowd and interactions, what a great venue! Thanks to the organizers in @amethystccs.bsky.social , incl. @diogolpires.bsky.social , for inviting me!
Visit AMETHYST in room 149 at @css-conference.bsky.social, for a full day satellite on Game Theory in Complex Systems in Siena ๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐น
There is a great panel of invited speakers and contributed talks you can find here:
The AMETHYST satellite kicked off this morning in Siena, Italy ๐ฎ๐น, with opening remarks by Alberto Antonioni!
Katerina Stankova then delivered a great invited talk on the present and future of Game Theory of Evolving Systems, with a focus on cancer treatment applications.
Find us in Room 149!
Iโll present a simple, decentralised & scalable individual strategy that drives self-organisation in systems of multiple commons.
The mechanism offers new insights for behavioural ecology, and practical applications to Internet services & the governance of natural and socio-technical commons!

Today Iโm presenting my work on the self-organisation of common goods usage at @css-conference.bsky.social! ๐ฎ๐นโจ
Find me in Social Systems 3 at 12:45, to hear about the challenges faced by natural and human-made commons and how to solve them (session starts 11.30)!

Happy to share that @spac.bsky.social was awarded an @erc.europa.eu PoC
It's a bit of an unusual one: the innovation is in policy. We want to help scientists, NGO's, journalists... implement @ec.europa.eu #DSA #Article40 and make the internet a better place
