I would argue one of these numbered items is an inferior product, but it's such a huge fucking joy to sell comics and @charliestickney.bsky.social's awesome work.

I think it'd be cool if we had a larger discussion on the direction of conventions in NA- how expensive they are, how little artists make back, how much artists have to put in to even get accepted- And let's not forget how ridiculous the expectations are for presentation and merchandise with tables.

I do not expect everyone who comes to my table to buy something. You don’t gotta tell the creators you have no money, they also have no money. You can just make eye contact, tell them you really like their work and subscribe to their newsletter. That goes a long long way!
It’s likely the artist behind that ECCC table paid at least
$450 for the table
$500-700 for lodging
$150 (+) for food/drink
$300+ for merch.
The financial risk is real! Be nice to the creators behind the table and even if you don’t got the $$ to spare, a kind word goes a long way.
We aren’t guests. At most of these conventions. We’re customers.
I do very few shows each year, and usually one or two will comp me a table - but nothing else.
Cons ALWAYS are a money loss for me.
I only do it to reconnect with folks and promote books.

You’ll never hear us brag about the most comics, you’ll always here us brag about the best comics. The crew at White Ash have proven themselves constantly against the hardest metric in comics: how to build an audience online and sell directly to consumers.
When picking publisher launch order we, of course, love our biggies. But in order to grow comics we need to make platforms for publishers like @charliestickney.bsky.social to thrive. Which, we think, means two things, getting people access and being selective.
