For a written account of this event see @vch-oxon.bsky.social website. Chipping Norton Rural District built 10 council houses on the appropriately named New Road in Kingham in 1920-1. They were built by Hinkins & Frewin of Oxford, each pair forming an E-plan, alternately hipped roofed and gabled.

Always a pleasure to be able to share new draft text from @vchlondon.bsky.social. This, from what will be the 22nd volume for the VCH Oxfordshire series, like all VCH text, details the parish from the earliest times, to the present.
Look out for the book late next year (I think).

Page from a ledger: off white lined paper with columns drawn in fine red lines. Left hand column headed 'Corby Hundred' with names of parishes below. Fourth column from left includes various notes: we'll come to those shortly...
While leafing through some of @vchlondon.bsky.social's uncatalogued archival material with the help of @amalexathorn.bsky.social, yesterday, I came across these notes in a ledger.
The ledger in question served as a sort of progress log for books in gestation (many not yet published yet!). ๐งต

VCH Oxfordshire Christmas Lecture gave an update on work for Volume 22 including on the West Oxfordshire parishes of Chadlington (yes, Clarkson's Farm was mentioned), Kiddington, Kingham, and Spelsbury. A chance to catch up with lots of VCH supporters and make some useful contacts.

New edition of John Field's The Battle of Southsea, first published by Portsmouth Papers in 1981. It tells the story of a riot in 1874 when a huge crowd fought for four days to remove fences enclosing a small area of Southsea Common. A review will appear for www.hantsfieldclub.org.uk in 2025.

A section of the 1259 pipe roll - very abbreviated Latin text, recording debts owed to the government.
If you find pipe rolls, like this, a bit off-putting, then you might be interested in my book Approaching Pipe Rolls. It tries to explain what pipe rolls are, and how to read and understand them. The paperback edition is published today (link below). #medievalsky

The rood screen at Shilton (Oxfordshire), carved by Harry Hems, dates from 1884 and includes what is claimed to be 'the first rood erected in the Diocese of Oxford since the Reformation' (The Builder). Is that true, and are there comparable examples from other dioceses around that date?

Until the 19th century Shilton near Burford was a detached part of Berkshire, except for the church which was included in Oxfordshire. The Oxfordshire county map of 1797 unhelpfully leaves the Berkshire part of the parish blank.
