Teachers who are using whole class novels AND expecting students to keep up an independent reading life, how are you keeping them accountable to the ind. rdg without killing the joy?

I told a Ukrainian student of mine that we always have pierogi on Christmas Eve, so she showed up on Friday with a bag of frozen ones made fresh by her mom. So thoughtful (and delicious)!

Middle school teachers: does your school give semester exams? If so, in all academic areas?

I think I agree. I’m thinking for 6th/7th, we spell it out for them. By 8th they make a choice for themselves about which organizer they need.

I’ve heard AMAZING things about this book from a friend who has an advanced copy. He’s determined to bring you to our school next year to talk about it!

Book cover THE TROUBLE WITH HEROES shows a surly 7th grade boy with a backpack and FDNY baseball hat standing on top of a mountain, looking into the distance. A drooly Bernese Mountain Dog looks up at him adoringly.

A1: I’m ready to have a place where I can go to connect to other people again. In the early days of TOP (I like that!) I got so many great ideas and was so involved. Over the years, I got swallowed up and intimidated by bigger accounts. I miss talking teaching and books.

I’m a middle school English department chair in a K-12 independent school in Nashville, TN. My role is semi-administrative as I make curriculum decisions and have a small say in hiring/evals. I’d love to connect with other teacher leaders!

Feeling the same. It feels nice to have a fresh, blank slate. Now I just need to put myself out there more!

β€œMrs. Ruf, I had to buy you a new copy of Call Us What We Carry because I started annotating without even realizing I was writing all over your book!” It’s a great day when an 8th-grader reads/annotates poetry on their own for fun!

A couple of years ago, a teacher on the other app talked about a Romeo & Juliet/Long Way Down unit. Anyone remember who that was?
