The thing about the Dead is that both Bill Kreutzmann and Phil Lesh swung hard enough to make an entire band swing all by themselves.
And they were in the same band.
Either would transform 95% of all jam bands I've heard. Not make better. Transform them.
And they were in the same band.

That wasn't magic. It came from thousands of hours of self-aware practicing. He got to that special place where he could get exactly what he heard in his head to come out of his bass.
That involves the chops to make it happen but also the imagination to hear it that good in the first place.

Listening to 7/8/78 and Phil's articulations!. The "left edge" of the notes are so damn clear.
It's easy to play w/ a super clear attack when you're playing loudly + a little aggressively. But Phil had the same clarity of attacks in all registers and across all volumes.
That was his secret sauce.

...having something that is 100% on autopilot and then having to layer specific thinking on top of that is really, really hard in my musical experience.
I think that's what's going on with this.
But that's not to say that Trey doesn't suck at Phish. Because he does. ๐คฃ

...the same way to me. If I know something backwards and forwards I can essentially set it to autopilot and let the flow state thing happen. I also have a lot of practice sight reading and being nothing but analytical because the data is all new to me. Straddling those two, or more specifically...

...to me. Having performed so much music from memory over the years, I can say that things just go on autopilot. Not that anyone here would assume that they are thinking really hard as they play a song for the 200th time. But muscle memory takes over and it actually takes a lot to override that...

They got it right at the Baker's Dozen, although Mike initially landed on an F# instead of an F at the transition. They also got it "less wrong" on 8/4/23. They kind of sort of not really hit F in the right spot but went around a third time and then nailed it. It's not actually super surprising...

The Eastern Conference standings in the NBA showing the Boston Celtics with the second best record in their conference.
The fact that the #Celtics did this without Tatum (or Porzingis or Holiday or Horford) is one of the most surprising Boston sports developments in my lifetime.
I will never doubt Stevens or Mazzulla ever again. Or Jaylen. #NBA

I use the 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 designations as purely chronological markers. For me these labels have absolutely nothing to do with anything musical or stylistic in any way.
Grouping #Phish into stylistic periods is an interesting discussion. But no one would group 1989 with 1999 which to me...

My Grateful Dead education was 100% on live tapes. I have literally never sat down and listened to a studio album before. And to this day when I listen to them I go straight for live stuff.
Just listened to the studio Terrapin Medley for the first time and I *hate* the production on Jerry's vocals.

That album is so good! It came out during my first week in college in September '93 and I wore it out in the dorm. I had seen Helmet, Living Colour, Faith No More and Pearl Jam by the time this album came out. I couldn't believe getting a release with all of them on it.
