Itβs sad that this is the reality.

A 3-tier metal & wire shelving system, being prepared for seed starting. 2 shelves have plastic sheeting covering them, and LED plant lights lay on the shelves, waiting to be set up. The windows behind the shelving unit look out to bright blue skies & plenty of sunshine.
An orange & white cat lays on a water-catchment tray on a shelf inside the small metal greenhouse that will be used for seed starting. He makes himself at home, cozied in the warm sunlight.
Stacks of black plastic plant pots sit on a clean stainless steel countertop, waiting to go into a hot, sudsy bath to be cleaned prior to being used this season.
Black plastic plant pots, upside down on a white towel, drip drying after being washed.
Spent the first taste of springtime-type temps of 2026 in the greenhouse, both stewing over the latest fresh hell that is the news today, and embracing the tradition of spring cleaning in preparation of starting fresh new life π±

Thank you! π We don't heat it currently; it's actually where we grow all our berries. We pull the plastic off both the ends in the summer months, cos behind the plastic is chicken wire. So in the heat it can breathe, but birds & deer are kept away from our fruit!
Photo of a hand in a knit winter glove holding a very long pole with a wide push broom head on the end. The ground all around is covered in snow.
Photo of the entrance end of a hoop house (AKA polytunnel) surrounded by a thick blanket of snow and snow still falling heavily from the sky. There is no snow piled on top of the hoop house, however, because it was all removed with the extension pole broom.
Hubs hooked me up with a custom snow remover for the hoop house (duck taped a push broom to an extension pole). Worked like a charm!

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
A-telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
A moody black & white photo of a large tree with bare branches in a misty winter morning. High atop the branches sit several vultures. Text over the photo reads: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." by Desmond Tutu
ABOLISH ICE
All gardeners eventually become either scientists or witches.
Yes, a worship service is sacred.
So is the image of God in your immigrant neighbor.
So is the image of God being dragged from his home in his underwear on a snowy day.
So was the image of God that bled out for 8 minutes while being refused medical care.

A picture of a Rosemary bush in an outdoor garden, covered in several inches of white, fluffy snow. Only the very top branches of the plant can be seen poking out of the snow. Text on the photo reads: "Stillness is the flower of winter; all hope waits beneath a blanket of white." A quote by John Muir
I am one of those folks who, in January, is in no rush for winter to end. I appreciate & embrace the cold & the dark, and let hibernation mode fully have me. Plus the snow is just so dang pretty.
I'll be singing a different tune come March 1st, but for today, winter is a welcome friend.
I'm sooo in!! πβ¨οΈπ
Remember, it's only technically Orwellian if it's from the Orwell region of England, otherwise it's just sparkling authoritarianism
Sooo beautiful π great pic!
A variety of overgrown, messy potted succulents and houseplants sit on a blue tarp covering a table, waiting to be cleaned up & propagated.
4 tall evergreen trees stand together across from a snow-covered clearing, with their limbs gently weigned down by the 3 inches of white snow clinging to them.
Propagation Stationβ’οΈ set up on the kitchen table, ready to rescue some overgrown succulents, while 3+ inches of snow is piling up around the farmstead.

A dark red chicken coop in the snow; about 7 inches of undisturbed snow lie all around & atop the roof of the coop. Clouds in the sky are moving to the left of the photo, allowing clear blue sky to show through on the right. Text over the photo reads: "Anyone who thinks that gardening begins in the spring & ends in the fall is missing the best part of the year; for gardening begins in January with the dream.", a quote by Josephine Neuse

Trust the Evidence, not the Narrative (or just: Evidence, not Narrative)
The left hand of a middle-aged white lady is holding a small sculpted clay head. In the background is a table with several sculpting tools laid upon it.

Mushroom spore landing in my lungs: I eat?
My immune system: no not right now heβs still alive
Mushroom spore: ok i wait
Strange men wearing masks shooting citizens is no basis for a system of government.
A photo of a slumbering garden, with brown leaves all over the ground, a white clay flower pot & half wine barrel in the background. Text over the photo reads: "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes & ears. It was their final, most essential command... and if all others accepted the lie which the party imposed, if all records told the same tale, then the lie passed into history and be became truth." -1984, by George Orwell
A photo of a middle-aged white woman's hand holding a black & rust-colored chicken feather. The text over the photo reads: Privilege is being able to wonder if it's your fight. Empathy is knowing that if someone is hurting, it already is.
The horrors persist. But so do we.

A branch of a raspberry bush, with leaves just starting to yellow, has several ripe red Raspberries clinging to the end.
A few clusters of multiple raspberries as they are just beginning to ripening on the branch. A couple of ripe red raspberries can also be seen, as well as lots of green leaves in the background.
October raspberries just hit differently π

The view down the central path of raised garden beds. Most of the beds have buckwheat cover crop poking up through a layer of straw. Marigolds still bloom, and green bean plants hang on even though some leaves are brown & wilted from the first frost. A wicker basket, ceramic bowls, and large rubber bucket are filled with today's pepper & green bean harvests. Some chicken friends can be seen in the background, wandering around their run.
2 raised beds with green buckwheat poking up through a layer of straw are in the foreground. The neighboring bed has broccoli & cabbage growing happily under insect netting. In the background is another row of beds with blooming calendula & buckwheat.
A bed of thriving calendula flowers, blooming in shades of golden yellow to pinky-peach
Been a hot minute since I've shared a garden update here; our schedules have been maxed out & we've been riding that ragged edge of total burnout. Thankfully the cool crisp Autumn air has finally arrived, & we're staying busy with fall chores. & October is one of my absolute favorite things ππ
it's like we can feel it in our bones when it's time to plant the fall crops π±
Omg, totally teeny bats!! So cute - and great pics!
