I have made it to Detroit. Feast your eyes on parking lots galore, and also Belle Isle.

Departure: 16:05

The bus is departing Southfield.

Unlike the industrial cities of Detroit and Pontiac, Southfield transitioned very well to a service economy, building plenty of office space (and residential, like this building) that served it well even as Detroit languished.

Departure: 15:40

The bus is departing Pontiac.

We have entered Metro Detroit, and the signs of past decline aren't too hard to spot. Empty, abandoned buildings. Cracked roads. All buildings, inhabited or otherwise, in that same 50s building style.

But hey, the Wolverine is here. That's cool.

The bus is departing Flint.

Infamous for its water crisis, Flint had suffered for decades before the state decided that water protection was too expensive to continue. But hey, at this point, damn near every pipe in the city has been replaced with not-lead.

The bus is departing Saginaw

The largest of the Tri-Cities, Saginaw was hit the hardest by de-industrialization of any city thus far on our trip. (Most cities thus far declined in the 20th century, but this is the start of post-industrial Michigan.)

Still, some industry remains.

The bus is departing Bay City.

One of the Tri-Cities nestled between the Thumb and the rest of Michigan. The Tri-Cities are the northernmost bits of Michigan's Rust Belt. They continue to suffer from decades of globalism whisking industrial jobs to foreign sweatshops.
