Believe it or not, on April 24, 2019 (20190424), I saved a paper with a file name "mermaids_awsome.pdf". When I was a master student! I am now working at the home of mermaids!😭

[13] I like that in Géoazur, there are non-research interactions with members of the lab. We enjoy our lunch/coffee together, talking about private life sometimes. I think I didn't have much except with non-US postdoc while I was in the USA. It seems like it is a good place to live as a single!
Since then, my unconscious instinct hasn’t let me think about expanding what I am doing. That’s the fun of science and motivation to finish the current work. Not a good excuse, but that drags everything back. It’s painful. I only wish I could survive through these swirls of uncertainty. 3/3
A postdoc whose immigration status depends on the contract can’t really think a year ahead. My past contract, when I just started thinking about a longer future in my PI’s lab, I had to leave due to unexpected funding uncertainty. 2/3
[12] I always feel bitter and think "Ah, I wish I were a permanent researcher" when projects in 2027 and 2028 are discussed. Stability of the researcher brings creativity! 1/3
[11] Géoazur is really well balanced in terms of the sub-disciplines of seismology! We have a big group doing experiments, modeling, observation (active/passive), geodesy, network engineers, imagers, seismicity catalogers, and more... It's a dream lab to me...
Friday’s M3.5 and its 13 aftershocks overlap with the aftershock region of the 2020 M5.7 Magna earthquake and is likely an aftershock of the 2020 event. Seismicity in the Magna area is still elevated relative to pre-2020 levels, indicating that aftershocks are still continuing.
[10] I am learning that implementing the FAIR principles requires a lot of energy and time from many people! Working on MERMAIDs to make it shareable with a wide audience in the near future. I am happy to have this experience with colleagues in the institute!
About the HEB (Hawaiian Emperor Bend) array !
SeisBench v0.11 is out now, the largest feature and performance update to SeisBench so far! In this thread, I'll highlight some of the key contributions. Thanks to everyone who helped putting together this release!

[9] As in Japan, I have chances to learn the inside electronics of instrument I am using. This really helps to understand what is happening in my data set and sometimes provides a great chance to improve it, for better and wider usage.
After reviewing nearly 200 applications from prospective grad students and postdocs over the past few months for a couple different 🧪⚒️ postings, here are some tips, at least as they apply to North American positions. I hope they help future applicants. Share with your networks. 🧵
In French, "travaille" is work, not traveling! I always found this interesting from the very beginning. Anyways, I am saying this because the best pizza shop in the neighborhood is closed for "travaux", which I thought (again!) the owner is traveling out! But it was closed for renovation... 🫠
Will such large-scale (spatially large and multi-year) experiments happen again? If so, where? In the US? Or are we now limited in resources that we have to gather from multiple countries? Or do we not need such experiments anymore?
It is impressive that the USArray(15 yr) and the Cascadia Initiative, REALLY big seismic experiments, were done by a single country, the US. Those data sets not only supported many PhD students at that time, but also are endlessly giving us new insights with advancing analysis methods.
I do feel the emptiness and AGU becoming more "American" than it used to be... reminding me of Bong Junho's quote "The Oscars are not an international film festival. They're very local.”
It was a great #AGU25 meeting, as always! After years in the US, previously in Japan, and now in France, I feel like everyone(in seismology) is familiar! It was funny when I said, "do I know you?" at a gathering. Thanks to all who remember me!
A small technical favorite part is that we used an ensemble of models (posterior probability) from the Bayesian to calculate the amount of displacement. I believe this is a good approach to appreciate the seismic model from the Bayesian approach, rather than using a median or maximum profile.
Some geological context is explained in the paper and in detail in the supplement. I recommend reading it!
I remember the excitement we had when the receiver functions were significantly different! RFs with geophones are good enough to get very laterally and vertically high resolution image!
The paper is very meaningful because the East Bench fault, although active, was not explored well enough from trenching due to urbanization. Knowing the amount of displacement due to fault movement is meaningful to know the EBF within ~12 Ma Wasatch front.
New paper in! Using a ~3 km long dense geophone array, we were able to capture laterally sharp bedrock offset caused by normal faulting movement of the active East Bench fault of the Wasatch front.

#AGU25 meeting is coming in two days! We have a great session on the ⭐Geophysics in the Oceans (DI11A, DI12A)! Not only sharing observations, but also modeling and new frontiers! It's the first session on ⭐Monday morning. Consider getting your name tags in advance, so as not to miss our first talks!
So many familiar faces at the airport border control with poster tubes which made things easier!
[8] Here, last week, on Saint Barbe's day, geologists acknowledged the day as “Geologists’ day” and had a small celebration. I think I will bring this culture anywhere else I go! fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%AA...

A trace of me in one of French conferences, nicely included in pictures of the group and listening to presentations! www.epos-france.fr/en/blog/2025...
Finally! The number of citation of my seismology paper exceeded the number of my marine biology paper! Yay! I look less suspicious on my google scholar, I hope
[7] Yesterday, someone asked "is your lab dynamic?" Without doubt, Geoazur is dynamic! 120 permanent researchers/engineers and 80 non-permanent including PhD students. It is hard to be not dynamic. It's just that I should set priorities not to get too excited.
