The Melsonby Hoard is thought to be the largest collection of Iron Age metalwork ever discovered in the UK. It was found in December 2021 by amateur metal detectorist Peter Heads in a field near the village of Melsonby, North Yorkshire. Ralph Bates would have been 86 today. The handsome leading man found fame in playing numerous roles for Hammer, including HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN and DOCTOR JEKYLL & SISTER HYDE. He was only 51 when pancreatic cancer claimed his life; a charity in his name continues to fight the disease.
