Ex-Meta lobbyist put in charge of EU's digital rules: 'Tech oligarchy writing its own rulebook' Pressure is growing to drop the appointment of a former Meta lobbyist, elected as an MEP in 2024, from a file which could rewrite the EU's regulation of US tech giants.

Like having an arsonist at a fire safety convention?

A former Meta chief lobbyist was appointed by the @eppgroup.bsky.social as rapporteur for a key digital law which critics say will benefit Big Tech.

πŸ“£ Together with other watchdog organisations we have today issued a call to withdraw Aura Salla’s appointment as Digital Omnibus rapporteur.

Before becoming an MEP, Ms Salla was an executive lobbyist at Meta, serving as its Public Policy Director and Head of EU Affairs. And here stated goal is "to cut EU digital regulation".

Therefore, she is not suitable for the job as rapporteur.

Big news: the European Commission has told Meta that its exclusion of rival AI assistants from WhatsApp is anti-competitive, and ordered it to reverse the policy.

This is very fast by the EC's standards; the original investigation was only opened in December.
