I think an intentionally "worse" single can protect an album from haters. It's a fine line to walk, because the single does need to grab attention and pique interest, but only from those willing to listen with an open mind & heart.
I've listened to TS since 2006. When I heard LWYMMD as the single for reputation, I became completely disinterested in the album. The rest of that album is much more lyrically vulnerable and musically complex than the single. I missed out on that due to having a bad attitude about the single.
