Thanks to @uniofleicester.bsky.social's Institute for Environmental Futures and @nceoscience.bsky.social for sponsoring the meeting. Finally a massive thanks to Cristina for all of her hard work in organising the meeting!

Great to see so many colleagues from @ukceh.bsky.social and @metoffice.gov.uk as well as lots of new members to the community!
We welcomed the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) community to Space Park Leicester this week for the Annual Science meeting where we discussed lots of exciting advances (and challenges!) in modelling the land surface environment.
Great poster presentation from @shrijanap.bsky.social and Iβm really proud to see how far sheβs come during her PhD! Sheβs grown so much in confidence, presenting her excellent research on wildfire anomalies at ESA #LPS2025
Large @physicsuol.bsky.social and @nceoscience.bsky.social contingent at ESA #LPS2025 this week!
Great week at ESA #LPS2025 presenting on wetlands, methane, wildfires, greenhouse gases and drought!
List of presenters and their topics at ESA Living Planet
We'll be at ESA Living Planet presenting on lots of topics including methane, wetlands, GHG measurements, machine learning, drought and wildfires :-)

The "less vulnerable" high latitudes that are experiencing the highest rates of warming through Arctic amplification? *sigh*
Yesterday, our staff joined the @spacecentre.bsky.social Centre in celebrating a belated Earth Day!
In our aims to improve our local area and get outside, we have launched monthly litter picks, supporting efforts to keeping our Space City rubbish free.

Graph of science funding of NASA from 1980 until present with estimated 50% cut included. This drops NASA Science to under $4B. Image source: Casey Dreier/The Planetary Society
Cuts to #science of >50% at NASA and >75% at NOAA would end US climate and space science research.
NASA cuts are '...an "extinction level" event': arstechnica.com/space/2025/0...

I'm sure you'll have a well-being webinar at some stage to make up for the lack of pay progression too!
The Global Carbon Budget is well known, less known is the work done on Regional Carbon Budgets (figure shows Australia).
The next phase of work on regional carbon budgets will focus on the country level, with lots of rich detail to be explored.

I'm looking to hire a post-doc to work on tropical wetland #methane modelling. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, get in touch. Happy to have an informal chat before applications :-) Closing date 4th May.

One of the more impressive venues for a NERC meeting!
Easy solution to fix this? Defund NOAA so the measurements wonβt exist π
Preliminary data suggests that the global average increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration in 2024 will be a record.
Not just a little record, but 25% higher than the previous record.
(This is the global average, as opposed to Moana Loa)

The final peer-reviewed version of the Global Carbon Budget 2024 is now published: essd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...
Only slight updates compared to the submitted version last November, mainly related to updated data.

I think Nature's position is completely fair. However, to be consistent, they also need to be happy with "Hey ChatGPT, create a cheque to pay Nature's APC invoice and send it to them" ;-)
Great opportunity for people at all levels to get involved.
It did. Itβs called Teams though. All the tech ended up in there.
Apropos of everything, I keep a very frequently (these days) updated list of internships/jobs across the wx-climate enterprise here: wx.erau.edu/about/opport.... Open to anyone, not just our students. I will start including higher-level positions than I normally do (normally focus on entry-level).
Hope all my NOAA colleagues/collaborators are doing ok :-( If anyone's got experience in land surface modelling, wetland hydrology, methane emissions, etc and is looking for a job, let me know!
My team is working to pilot a method for tracking the effects of climate shocks on people. If you or anyone you know was affected by the Wildfires in California, please fill out this SHORT ANONYOUS survey (and share it with your networks):

PSA that the FATESmodel can now in principle do grazing, thanks to @ckoven.bsky.social βs excellent efforts. People who measure the C,N or P efficiency of grazing animals, please do chime in if you can help us refine it!
You know the curse is real when you see fans stretching their hamstrings just in case before entering the stadium! @tottenhamhotspur.com
From the Uk, those 60% rates already look low!
Come work with us in #NextGenCarbon! (postdoc position in Julia Pongratzβ group in Munich) job-portal.lmu.de/jobposting/6...
It all seems to be back :-)
