Can honestly say this was up there among the most positive experiences of my career so far. A rare, invaluable time to sit down and discuss with wonderful, interested colleagues a book that will be so much better for it.
Cannot recommend it enough.

Find this a lot with parenting books (and maybe pop social science and psychology more broadly) -- you can be in and out in 40k words odd and we'll get the idea, way too much padding in so many of these

I had to miss #dhd2026 due to illness, but I’m happy to be back in time for Julia Hübner’s workshop on “Invisible Women – New Perspectives on Language History” @uni-hamburg.de with @fsldigital.bsky.social @earlymodernjohn.bsky.social and many others!

I just really think that videoing other people needs to be very obvious. I'm in Ethiopia a lot recently and my algorithm is showing me all these travel content creators being incredibly invasive with video in African cities and then pretending to be surprised or offended when people react badly.

People can debate AI all they like, but surely we can all agree that anyone who owns or uses a pair of the pervert glasses that secretly record people should be ostracised immediately and totally from our society? I'm sorry but your pervert glasses prove you're a pervert! Get out of town!

A friend recommended the Oberhafen-Kantine in Hamburg last night, and it was pure pleasure to sit in a cosy bar in a building leaning heavily to one side, eating labskaus and drinking Rostock beer, and reading Irmgard Keun. I'm also fairly certain that the bread I asked for had been fried in lard.

'prolem facu nutriri'. LAO/Cj.4/fol.36v
Anyone out there dealing with C16 punishments of pregnant women? I have a record that says that the court ordered the child to be provided for by speech ('prolem facu nutriri'). Any idea what this means in practice? There are a couple of crossings out, but I'm sure 'facu' is the word written. TIA

Quite the get-up-and-go attitude on display from the guy who shows up at the French Church of London in 1564: everyone knows he's crap at reading and he won't stop singing songs about war, but he's here and he would like a girl he can marry, please.

Second time in Hamburg, second time arriving at Hamburg airport while my luggage takes a citybreak somewhere else. Anyone have any experience of claiming clothing and other essentials back from Turkish Airlines? Not sure I can present a scholarly paper in a Belfast pub t-shirt and dusty trainers...

I'll check the exact date but yes, it's pre-1585! These records have a lot of residual Latin in them, and being made in England you also get elements of English and French so your analysis fits it nicely.

መልካም አድዋ! Happy battle of Adwa day from Addis Ababa airport, where I'm toasting the event with a cold Habesha beer.

If anyone's interested in a fascinating [sic] situation where "onder" is mistakenly translated as "under" in an English translation of a sixteenth-century Dutch will, please mark your calendars for several years from now when my book is done

Do we know if there was one? Am just adding some information requested by a reviewer about the place/use of consistory archives in the stranger churches. In the FC they're in "larmoire du consistoire"

Yes, I was wondering whether they meant among the group of scribes, or whether schrifterij might have more of a place-y meaning. Thank you!

Trying to work out what precisely is meant by 'schrifterij' when someone in the London Dutch Church describes documents as ‘rustende onder de schrifterij aen der consistorie’. It's not in the Historische Woordenboeken. Grateful for thoughts from early modern Dutch experts (no guesses please!).
