With Japanโs Lower House election underway, LDP is set for a historic win. It looks like Japanese politics is going to become even more interesting for religion scholars, especially if (as seems likely) the LDP achieves so high a majority that PM Takaichi moves forward on constitutional revision. ๐

Thanks, Christian. I donโt think the ad assume that history and sociology are the same thing. It just gives an option between modern history OR sociology. We welcome applications from scholars with either of these two areas of expertise to support teaching in EALC.

Japanese Religions | nccisjp
I learned a great deal from reading Timothy O. Benedictโs 'Spiritual Ends' and from writing a review of this thoughtful and compelling account of end-of-life care in contemporary Japan. I also look forward to the accompanying special issue on embodied worlds and the body in Japanese religions.

Cyber NamuNamu is a live techno performance that blends Buddhist chanting (the โnamuโ recitation/sutra-style vocals) with club beats & immersive digital visuals (mandalas, floating golden Buddha statues). Ritual-meets-rave meant to make Buddhist practice feel contemporary & meditative in new ways.

Cyber NamuNamu puts a techno spin on Buddhism
Cyber NamuNamu is injecting new life into Buddhism with its electronic performances accompanied by Buddhist priestesses reading sutras.

Today's #ManuscriptMonday shows "tendoku," a way of "reading" a Buddhist sutra by rapidly fanning it out and then letting it cascade while chanting the title or a small section. In this case, the priest touches the book to the body as a ritual empowerment for protection.

The Tokyo District Court strips the Unification Church (or Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) of its religious corporation status. A new financial reality for the group and a germane development for the religious freedom legal landscape in Japan.
