Whether it’s said or not, I would imagine most situations in which people opt for this is going to be to save time and money. When they really need to be considering if this is the most appropriate method for answering RQ, engaging with participants, and weighing up benefits and risks.
Again I would say the question is whether this is still an interview in the qualitative sense. It’s fine to be open to some AI possibilities but jumping in without considering the ethical or societal costs and what this means for good quality research / interviews is problematic…
Never mind the ethical aspects of where the AI interview data is then stored and how it is (most likely in future!) used to train AI.
For me, it’s a no. In qual interviews there’s the need to build trust, rapport & empathy with participants on a human level. The emotions, demeanour and body language of participants is also part of the rich qual insights we gather by being present / there with them.…
