This very well might provoke the US to economically punish Canada. Carney is being utterly pragmatic.
The fact of the matter is that Canada is profoundly economically vulnerable (and will be for at least 5 years). Carney is buying time. His remarks are a stopgap measure.
As to The PM’s unfortunate remarks supporting the attacks on Iran, it seems that Carney is just saying what he has to say to protect domestic Canadian economic interests. If he comes out not supporting the US —I.e., if he takes the properly moral position—he risks angering the US.
You (perhaps) adequately explain Israeli involvement. You do not explain US involvement. Why is there US involvement at this moment? Suggesting the war is escalated because it is war is a tautology with little explanatory value.
Trump will get richer, Gaza will become a resort, and the poor Palestinian people will either become slaves in their own territory or exiled to the global hinterland.
In some quite undisclosed conversation, an agreement was reached. The US degrades Iran profoundly, and Trump gets control of Gaza. Israel’s war with Iran will continue for years, the US will backstop it with arms and military support for Israel.
My hot take on Iran: this has nothing to do with a nuclear program, terrorism, or any of the stated US policy goals. It does have everything to do with Israel, and the fact that Netanyahu needs a state of constant war to maintain in political office.

An annoying thing that demonstrates that perhaps I am an idiot: recording a quasi-brilliant lecture on Descartes, only to realize that my mic was muted from the third minute mark onwards.
Kirk was a man who spewed vitriolic hatred. He was killed both by and for an expression of that hatred.
Neither Kirk’s particularly loathsome brand of hatred, nor the ignominious actions of his killer should be celebrated.
It is below the dignity of Parliament.
He advocated the most hateful sentiments in the most vitriolic ways.
He also advocated for gun violence.
In a moral system that consistently applies a principle of justice, one reaps what one sows.
We validated his toxic views; his end is direct realization of those views.
This is exactly correct. As the credit rating drops, the interest rate goes up—to compensate foreign investors for taking on more risk when they buy US debt.
Absolutely—a coordinated sell of of US T bills would force interest rates to climb, thus plunging to US into a simultaneous debt crisis and recession.
The US leader really needs to learn the use and function of upper-case letters.
