Edinburgh Walking and Cycling Index
Edinburgh is one of 22 areas Walk Wheel Cycle Trust has worked with on The Walking and Cycling Index - the UK and Ireland's biggest assessment of walking, wheeling and cycling in urban areas.
In #Edinburgh, the most people want to cycle more and the fewest people think it's safe to do so.
We see that 40% of people think an organised social ride would help them access cycling and we will be here for them on the 28th of March.

@edcriticalmass.bsky.social After many years of meaning to do a critical mass ride, made it along on Sat. Having seen +ive & -ive views on social media about the route, I was interested to see how it was received. My sense was v. +ive overall; lots of waves/thumbs-up/etc. Riders/marshals great.

Map showing CCWEL route, with counter points marked.
Michael Owen, an 89-year-old Edinburgh resident who uses his bike most days to stay fit, said: "I'm very supportive of improvements for cycling in the city. I'm approaching 90, and I use my bike to get local shopping most days. If it's a decent day I might add a mile or two onto my journey."
Cycling Scotland data report...
In Edinburgh, a growing network of cycle lanes is also seeing more people choosing to travel by bike.
Over the 48-hour survey period, traffic surveys recorded 4,744 bikes on Leith Walk. This was out of a total of 48,832 travel methods recorded, meaning that 9.7% of people cycled their journey β the highest cycling modal share yet seen on the route.
On the western-most portion of the new City Centre West East Link (CCWEL), at West Coates in Roseburn, 2,798 bikes were recorded over the same 48-hour survey period. This was out of a total of 30,175 travel methods recorded on the street, equating to 9.3% of journeys being made by bike β a new record cycling modal share for this section of route.
At York Place, where the new CCWEL protected cycle route connects to Leith Walk via Picardy Place, 1,921 cycle journeys were recorded over the two-day period. This is the largest number of bikes yet recorded at this location by a Cycling Scotland traffic survey and evidence of the growth in cycling being supported as routes join together.
π Nearly 10% of trips here already by π²
π What would it be with the missing #GeorgeStreet link?

A chart showing the relation between percentage reduction in mortality risk versus minutes per week of cycling. The chart shows a 17% reduction at 100 minutes with diminishing returns as the time increases up to a 30% reduction at 600 minutes per week.
We ride for safe streets.
"Ok, why?"
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... Figure 1
The most important part of the chart is where the line is steepest.
We don't want safe streets so confident cyclists can ride further or faster.
We want them so non-cyclists can ride at all.

Edinburgh Critical Mass
Official Edinburgh Critical Mass t-shirts
By the end of February some 80% of people who joined a gym in January will have quit.
Maybe it's time to ask if those goals could be met with 'cycle to work'. Readers probably already do, but maybe a t-shirt will help start the conversation with your colleagues.

FixMyStreet
Report, view, and discuss local street-related problems.
The city is a shared space and everyone should be playing nice.
But bikes are much more agile than cars so we can help fix things by stopping to report problems at www.fixmystreet.com in a way cars can't.
Report what it is and where it is and they'll get the message to the right people.
