Wonderful to receive copies of The General today, a sort-of follow-up to my Proceedings of 2021. Erratum Press are a great publisher, a joy to work with at every stage, and they do work with you. The books look great, Dick Chappell's cover painting reproduced beautifully @erratumpress.bsky.social

a change of scenery of pace of person a return to the absent

Blanchot the addressee for a short while there is no you
I write to him and say such is solitude to sit before the
emptiness of the page before the book to come before the
book already written dripping with the memory of you the
first encounter September 1999 L’espace littΓ©raire if how we
experience time would be all at once it would be then in
September 1999 at thirteen that I would have written all of
my words my sentences my fragments everything sprouting
from Blanchot the relics of love the off season seaside towns
solitude philosophy that crosses the threshold of the abstract
into the senses into the day to day philosophy that becomes
touch and whisper and embrace all from Blanchot solace
and something like a trace a path toward unknown places
that nevertheless felt familiar absence and fog a moment in
time then and now an invitation to more life more words

Maurice Blanchot died 23 years ago today. In September 1999, I read him for the first timeβ€”an encounter I eternalized in An Absence of Sea, but his influence lingers throughout this and all my other books, and there are even days when it feels that all my writing I owe to him.

Full book cover spread in a soft mauve background with faint pencil drawings across the surface.

On the front cover, a drawing shows two classical faces in profile and close together.

Text at the bottom right reads:

An Absence of Sea

Christina Tudor-Sideri

A block of text on the back cover reads:

at times oneiric confession at times philosophical contemplation in epistolary form An Absence of Sea unfolds as a breathless letter to the other a lover a double the sea time itself tracing the shadowed terrain where self meets its echo where longing takes on form where thought becomes touch moving through the quiet of solitude it follows the fragile carnal continuity of existence a gesture of return where the impossible is the only home that holds us a poetics of knowing and being known through the gaze through touch through the echo of another

Below that the ISBN and: Cover detail from Orpheus and Eurydice in Hades, Pietro Fancelli

Thrilled to see this book of mine coming out via the wonderful Erratum Press, a joy to work with. A cathartic blast from behind the pram, a speak-to-text hexing of the arsehole pretend gods currently strutting around the debating chambers. Get yourself one, take its ride, feel a tiny bit better.

β€œWhat makes Hermeslang by Spyridon St. Kogkas so fascinating is that traditional literary and visual semiotics fail to grasp the rich synthesis of theology, poetry, philosophy, and personal visions that is maintained in an unresolvable tension.” -- Edward J. Matthews
