I have empathy, that's why giving up for me would lead to despair - you seem pretty much in it for yourself, and not to care about how you effect others. If you think my responses are *happy ChatGPT* then it's clear you didn't actually read them.
I have a long answer to this, but I don't think you actually care, so won't waste words or (server) time replying to you with that detail. Should be suffice to say that I'm starting to think you're either a bot (no posts on your page), or working for the forces that want us to give up.
I don't believe tech can save us either. In my personal life I'm radically simplifying and reducing energy consumption, while putting up a fight for the same on a systemic level. You have a right to your opinion. I just can't live the rest of my life in a state of hopeless despair. That simple.
That is a tiny part of what I do, and in perspective/proportion. Incase you're interested, am currently running on solar in a fully insulated house that is electric power only, with a heat pump. And if I can just say - your sarcastic despairing attitude, though understandable, is not helping anyone.
I'm trying not to give up, but I admit, it's bleak - and increasingly hard to find reasons to keep putting my own body and safety on the line to fight for the change needed. But I persist. Not as a consumer (beyond what I need to be able to live with myself) but at a systemic legal/policy level.
The only way to actually change things is systemically. As you say, people are only doing what is government mandated and hardly anything more. Individual change cannot be relied on. Especially from the rich (i.e. people with houses, aiming to flip them for profit) -they think money will buy safety.
