Addendum 1: Read a couple of other people's reviews and I'm also actually a bit sad that Shiroyabu's character seems to be just Jabroni again when 25W spent so much time depicting how he was basically a baby in over his head, abusing his power, stomped down and radicalised into a state actor
I'll add to this thread if I have any further thoughts but whilst I had fun, I hope Grasshopper's next game (whether action or adventure) works on overall level design and feels more comfortable being in its own universe. Compared to TSC, FSR, 25W, this doesn't move anywhere. (10)
If you're going to reference things and bring back whole characters with their attached baggage, why not develop them further. For example if Kimberly/"SilverSox" were combined it could've given "SilverSox" a greater arc with Romeo rather than being sidelined past his chapter until the end. (9)
There's lots to chew on for sure if you're a fan but aside from name-dropping terms and brushing up against concepts like KTP's mystery deal-making beings, there's not a lot of earth-shattering revelations. KTP is name-dropped even though for romeo himself he doesn't really have a past to kill. (8)
But the game is too afraid to connect itself to the KTP narrative other than references that feel overindulgent and marvel-like. returning characters are undermined massively by serving only as means to menus and one doesn't even have a function besides football talk. (7)
The presentation is top-notch and GHM are at the top of their game. The UI, soundtrack (amazing!!), character and monster design is all fantastic and I loved every second of when the game would indulge fully. The car-driving section and accompanying music video sent chills down my spine... (6)
Otherwise I enjoyed more open areas like the compound, mall, and the asylum section was fun if a little slow. I also liked the rogue-like optional missions that are just an excuse to knock down hordes of enemies for loot.
I really loved the romeo/juliet story and the recurring dreams/loop... (5)
(I understand this is hand-waved away by calling these elements "space-time distortions" but you are not fooling anyone!)
The lowest point by far is the last stage which is essentially a tall tower with traps and enemies that will knock you off and kill you instantly to pad time. It's awful. (4)
I cant tell if earlier levels like the town hall are restricted in design because of the assets used, it's not really game-y but is instead like going through a pre-fab layout; a lot of this game gives off asset store vibes, especially when you start seeing medieval ancient catacombs in America (3)
Levels feel designed in a way that isn't comedically mean like the 25w maze or the 100 questions, just spiteful mean. lots of enclosed spaces that feel slapped together and the subspace sections are just glorified mazes of blocks that made me so nauseous at a point i had to take a break. (2)
scattered thoughts on romeo (FULL SPOILERS BELOW); it's OK. It's fun to hack up foes, use bastards and the game looks great. The story is great and I found myself raring to play each day. But the late game is lacking and level design is unforgivable and makes it hard to recommend the game... (1)
