A long, flexible tongue, present in both giraffes and okapis, sticks out of the corner of the mouth, nearly reaching the animal's eye. In the background there's a thick canopy of Quercus faginea, the Portuguese oak. Fossil remains of the genus Quercus from the Miocene have been found in Portugal.

Anyway, scarce remains of an extinct giraffid have been found in Portugal, though in 2022 a new study suggests it might have been a Sivatheriinae giraffid rather than Palaeotragus.

Hahaha that's delightfully ironic! I'm out there looking for spraints day in day out and not seeing a single otter in person and then a friend shows me a video of them in the river back home somewhere 😂
Almost 2.5 years into my PhD and I've only seen otters in person a grand total of (1) time. (excluding camera traps, of course) but they're there! I have proof! 🦦🦦🦦
