Took some time to start the day chilling and watching the sky change through the sunrise colour palette gradients.

Weโ€™ve got rain for next seven or so days ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Beyond XX and XY: The Extraordinary Complexity of Sex Determination A host of factors figure into whether someone is female, male or somewhere in between

If anyone happens to need it this week for...reasons...this is the best graphic on the complexity of human sex determination I've ever seen. I use it in an undergrad course on gene regulatory mechanisms. Shoutout to @unamandita.bsky.social!

THIS, so much. If you are an academic in any position of authority, then you have power to help change the 'more = better' narrative. When you write person specs, when you evaluate job/grant/fellowship applications, when you praise people in private convos... /1

A profile portrait of the extinct giraffid Palaeotragus, facing left. The animal has a medium to long neck with a few stripes, similar to the ones found on the hind limbs of okapis, and stark black and white markings to help it stay hidden in the forests it likely lived in. A long, flexible tongue, present in both giraffes and okapis, sticks out of the corner of the mouth, nearly reaching the animal's eye. In the background there's a thick canopy of Quercus faginea, the Portuguese oak. Fossil remains of the genus Quercus from the Miocene have been found in Portugal.

Palaeotragus sp.

Another one done for the project! Now it's going back to the dissertation.........
Anyway, scarce remains of an extinct giraffid have been found in Portugal, though in 2022 a new study suggests it might have been a Sivatheriinae giraffid rather than Palaeotragus.

Hahaha that's delightfully ironic! I'm out there looking for spraints day in day out and not seeing a single otter in person and then a friend shows me a video of them in the river back home somewhere ๐Ÿ˜‚

Almost 2.5 years into my PhD and I've only seen otters in person a grand total of (1) time. (excluding camera traps, of course) but they're there! I have proof! ๐Ÿฆฆ๐Ÿฆฆ๐Ÿฆฆ

An overview picture of a desk with a monitor screen and a laptop. The desk is next to a window with a blue sky and multiple plants

It has taken me over a year, but I finally have been able to move from my old desk facing the wall to a desk next to the window

I can now longingly stare out the window wondering when my husband will return from the war

Ecstatic x.
