I will absolutely get you started. I want to hear every last story about that stuff

Sorry to "Sincere Post", but we went out for teppanyaki to celebrate our last anniversary.
By which I mean, the last time we'll celebrate the night we met - after this year, we'll be celebrating our wedding anniversary.
Even more startling when things come OUT of the 5th dimension. Like, I lost a USB stick for a week then it reappeared somewhere I checked a dozen times. Or the time I hit a golf ball and TWO golf balls flew off??
I heard it was a secret Oddish? But yeah look, nah
I've had Amazon show up days late too though. I just don't trust anybody anymore
It's so weird that preordering has become a disadvantage. I've had a few deliveries that show up days later. Now I i find it's more reliable to just walk into a shop on day one and pick it up myself - if they don't have stock, go to a different place. And they usually price match each other
This would feel too on the nose in Fallout
They'll complain about Melbourne's weather but it hasn't stopped raining there since 2021
Honestly I think in some cases it's almost a revenge thing. Like "if I can't why should anyone?" I live regionally and the sentiment is very much against what people see as like "cosy city folk" getting coddled
Oh wow that's my local blacksmith
That's only like a quarter of the game though. There was also Big Dog, Big Fish, and worst of all, Big Baby
The ScienceAlert crew is in New Zealand this week for a retreat. This gorgeous scenery reminds me of that movie.... Spaceballs
Eh I caught em all (β’οΈ) in the Pokemon Red rerelease on the 3DS - then transported them to Home and forgot about them
That's awesome, congrats!
AI is absolutely gonna nail the "paper thin mobile game whose purpose is solely to sell ads for other paper thin mobile games" market
A baby Brachiosaurus with an adult in the game Jurassic World Evolution 3.
Anyway, I'm gonna try to put it all together and report back what I find. It's like, at least 20% science.
The non-dinosaur animals in the ecosystem are harder to simulate though. There's no crocodilians in the game, for example, and we can't just sub in like a Spinosaurus or something without massively upsetting the balance.
The nodosauridae phylogenetic tree, including Gargoyleosaurus and Nodosaurus.
So for example, there's no Gargoyleosaurus in JWE3. It looks like the next closest in-game relative is Nodosaurus.
No, you can't just use an Ankylosaurus - they have club tails, and we can't be giving our stand-in weapons that the original doesn't have!
Others aren't accounted for, but have close analogues in the game. For those, I'll check the phylogenetic tree and pick the closest genetic relative that IS in the game's roster.
A figure from the paper. Silhouettes of the different dinosaur species that lived in Jurassic era Montana.
So! The paper lists a series of species that lived in Jurassic Colorado about 150 million years ago. And a bunch of them are already in JWE3: we've got the sauropods Brachiosaurus, Apatosaurus and Diplodocus; carnivores like Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus; ornithiscians like Stegosaurus and Dryosaurus.
If I recreated the ecosystem described by the paper as best I could, would the game have the same outcome? Would the predators focus on juvenile sauropods, or would they attack everything regardless of risk? Only one way to find out.
Anyway, that night I was playing JWE3, hatched some baby Brachiosaurus, and joked to myself to make sure the gate to the Allosaurus pen was closed.
Orrrr I could open the gate and see what happened.
I was reading the paper to write this article. Turns out that because sauropods take so long to mature, they would've been easy prey for carnivores. Like, why would you fight a Stegosaurus for dinner when there were plenty of defenseless meals walking around?

Ok so this might be the nerdiest thing I've ever done, BUT: I wanna recreate this paleoecological paper about sauropod dinosaurs using @frontierdev.bsky.social's simulator Jurassic World Evolution 3.

1 and 2 are the best. I absolutely miss that "skulking around a big spooky building unlocking doors like a big metroidvania" vibe. Enjoyed the rest (to varying degrees) for what they were, but they weren't that
It's not cool until someone busts out a Game Boy Camera
Oh oops, I guess I also remembered that wrong! I retract my earlier quote tweet then
Nope! Ballarat High. I remember looking up alumni once and it was just footy players really
Based on a true story
Honestly it's probably @dangolding.com at this stage
