A new review brings together over 30 UK & international scientists to assess the latest evidence on how human activities, including bottom trawling and climate pressures affect seabed organic carbon stores.

In addition, spatial protection of impacted stocks might lead to the displacement of fishing fleets. Protection of vulnerable organic carbon in currently unfished areas ensures that fishing displacement will not impact vulnerable stocks.
Mobile bottom fishing is operating in increasingly deeper water (doi.org/10.1016/j.fi...). Trawling penetrates rapidly into Arctic shelf areas previously protected by extensive ice-cover as a response to interannual sea ice loss (doi.org/10.1088/1748...).
Most studies have focussed on seabed areas impacted by mobile bottom fishing for obvious reasons. The footprint of fishing is, however, not stable over time (doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...) and might change in the future.

We map organic carbon vulnerable to mobile bottom fishing in currently unfished areas of the Norwegian continental margin.
Why in unfished areas you might ask? Let me explain.

๐ New publication out!
Key message: Measuring dry bulk density is as important as measuring organic carbon content when estimating organic carbon stocks.
Shouldn't surprise, but needs to be said.

An image of the Norwegian continental margin showing hotspots and cold spots of seabed organic carbon. Hotspots are areas that are likely vulnerable to physical disturbance with respect to their climate regulating functions. They are located in the Skagerrak and central Barents Sea. Cold spots are areas that are relatively robust to physical disturbance and are found on the North Sea plateau, shelf banks in the Norwegian and southern Barents Seas and along the continental shelf break.

๐While we currently lack a consensus on the magnitude of organic carbon remineralisation through bottom trawling, there is an urgent need to address the ongoing climate crisis.
Here we map hotspots and coldspots of organic carbon in Norway to guide marine spatial planning.
