Bigger societal shifts or changes are often based on bigger issues. I dont think it helps to put people in these kinds of boxes.
It is psychology. feeling superior is one of them, as pointed out in one scientific study. Overconfidence and a lack of trust in government and institutions another.

I agree with you, it was a mistake I own. Flat-Earth belief wasn’t continuous indeed. People in Greece, Rome, the Islamic world, and medieval Europe all knew the Earth was a sphere. From about 500–1800 CE, almost nobody educated or influential claimed it was flat. thanks for clarification!
I think the word “still” is its own disinformation. Flat earth did not maintain believers through the millennia. It found new believers on YouTube because someone found themselves a good scam to run.
So are we asking why people still believe liars? Or just the lies we see?
