Everyone who is basically competent with computers knows about grep. It's ridiculously fast. It'll have been used many many times in the production of training data sets for LLMs to produce a kinda shittier and slower and less reliable version of grep. Not that grep doesn't have its limitations too.

Karl F. Freed, pioneering theoretical chemist and decoder of molecular complexity, 1942โ2026
This is so sad, Karl was rigorous, but took you seriously as a scientist even if you were merely a grad student from another place. I learned so much from his attention to details, despite meeting him only a handful of times at convenience.
Rest in peace Karl.

Is gen-AI research the new DEI?
Used to be folks would include "diverse" people on their proposals to get funded, now they have "gen-AI" learning in literally every proposal.
Just kidding. AI researchers don't have to deal with all the emotional trauma of being the unwanted member of the team!

Less than a quarter of Americans support the US-Israeli war in Iran, but legacy Jewish establishment groups like the ADL, AIPAC, and the Jewish Federations are throwing their weight behind this unpopular war, and theyโre falsely claiming to speak in the name of all American Jews while doing so.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.
I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

A tomahawk missile costs the taxpayers the same amount of money as one five-year major NIH research grant. Remember that every time they tell us one of those missed the target, blew up paintings of enemy aircraft or tanks, or was the fifth and unnecessary hit on the same target.

Good words of warning here. AI models are generally designed to read and incorporate (and, in a sense, believe) virtually everything they find online, with very few guardrails. The information can get divorced from its original source, context, & rebuttals or retractions. That's a really big problem

Civilians have had apparent seizures. One had his eyes roll back. Another had ribs broken.
โI felt like I was going to pass out and die,โ said a 16-year-old citizen put in a chokehold.
The government wonโt say if any agents have been punished.

Tennessee Wants to Let Schools Ban Immigrant Kids, Threatening to โEnd Public Education as We Know Itโ

In a few more days, the cost will exceed the annual US AID budget that they fully cut because it was "wasteful" to save lives in poor countries.
They are doing this while choking the Iranian people with toxic air and acid rains, claiming it's for our freedom. ๐ซ

This is now more than the ANNUAL budget of NSF, funding basic science for the entire country. They wanted to cut because it was wasteful and now they refuse to allocate the money, out of spite, choking the entire scientific enterprise of this country.
It's never the money, it's the priorities.

AI error or not, Iran school bombing is a permanent stain on Americaโs soul | Will Bunch
A debate on AI in warfare obscures the truth about an Iran school bombing. U.S. humans are to blame for this war crime.
They had names. They had beautiful faces. And they had the same dreams as your kids - crushed when American "precision" bombs slammed into their Minab elementary school, killing 175
Don't blame AI for this. Blame the sick humans who see war as a game
