Everyone who is basically competent with computers knows about grep. It's ridiculously fast. It'll have been used many many times in the production of training data sets for LLMs to produce a kinda shittier and slower and less reliable version of grep. Not that grep doesn't have its limitations too.

For comparison's sake, the entire National Park Service costs $3 billion - a year.

U.S. court allows state bans on gender-affirming care for adults in unprecedented ruling While bans on trans youthโ€™s care have been numerous in recent years, this is the first to restrict care for transgender adults.

NEWS: It was never about the children.

Transgender adults now face care restrictions after the ruling of the federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia.

Karl F. Freed, pioneering theoretical chemist and decoder of molecular complexity, 1942โ€“2026

This is so sad, Karl was rigorous, but took you seriously as a scientist even if you were merely a grad student from another place. I learned so much from his attention to details, despite meeting him only a handful of times at convenience.

Rest in peace Karl.

Is gen-AI research the new DEI?

Used to be folks would include "diverse" people on their proposals to get funded, now they have "gen-AI" learning in literally every proposal.

Just kidding. AI researchers don't have to deal with all the emotional trauma of being the unwanted member of the team!

Less than a quarter of Americans support the US-Israeli war in Iran, but legacy Jewish establishment groups like the ADL, AIPAC, and the Jewish Federations are throwing their weight behind this unpopular war, and theyโ€™re falsely claiming to speak in the name of all American Jews while doing so.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.

I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

A tomahawk missile costs the taxpayers the same amount of money as one five-year major NIH research grant. Remember that every time they tell us one of those missed the target, blew up paintings of enemy aircraft or tanks, or was the fifth and unnecessary hit on the same target.

Good words of warning here. AI models are generally designed to read and incorporate (and, in a sense, believe) virtually everything they find online, with very few guardrails. The information can get divorced from its original source, context, & rebuttals or retractions. That's a really big problem

Civilians have had apparent seizures. One had his eyes roll back. Another had ribs broken.

โ€œI felt like I was going to pass out and die,โ€ said a 16-year-old citizen put in a chokehold.

The government wonโ€™t say if any agents have been punished.

Because it's quite hard to read this as anything but a call for the expulsion (or worse) of 4.5 million people on the basis of their religion.

Total annual budget for NIGMS: 3.2 billion

Total (estimated) daily cost for war in Iran beyond the inestimable cost in human lives and suffering (and gasoline prices if thatโ€™s what you care more about, like many do): 900 million dollars (www.cnn.com/2026/03/06/p...)

Tennessee Wants to Let Schools Ban Immigrant Kids, Threatening to โ€œEnd Public Education as We Know Itโ€ A Tennessee bill would take the right to education away from undocumented children. The Heritage Foundation is pushing it in other states.

Literally everything the Heritage Foundation suggests is nauseating

โ€œThe stateโ€™s proposed โ€œtrigger laws,โ€ โ€ฆare direct challenges to Plyler v. Doe, a narrowly decided 1982 Supreme Court case that enshrined the right to a free Kโ€“12 public education regardless of immigration status.โ€

In a few more days, the cost will exceed the annual US AID budget that they fully cut because it was "wasteful" to save lives in poor countries.

They are doing this while choking the Iranian people with toxic air and acid rains, claiming it's for our freedom. ๐Ÿซ

Every hour of missiles killing kids in Iran and Lebanon, is equivalent to roughly 50 multi-year NSF grants that would fund a PhD student.

This is now more than the ANNUAL budget of NSF, funding basic science for the entire country. They wanted to cut because it was wasteful and now they refuse to allocate the money, out of spite, choking the entire scientific enterprise of this country.

It's never the money, it's the priorities.

AI error or not, Iran school bombing is a permanent stain on Americaโ€™s soul | Will Bunch A debate on AI in warfare obscures the truth about an Iran school bombing. U.S. humans are to blame for this war crime.

They had names. They had beautiful faces. And they had the same dreams as your kids - crushed when American "precision" bombs slammed into their Minab elementary school, killing 175

Don't blame AI for this. Blame the sick humans who see war as a game

They have one of the actual skylines behind their pay wall, but this is what they chose to show as the headline and that's still not ok.

On the bright side, they have finally learned not to use a passive headline. So, I guess, that's something.
