Social media erodes and threatens democracy worldwide, and it also gives us a venue for beautiful, amazing stuff like this:
Soon, voters in Switzerland will decide on a far-right pop initiative to cut funding for the public broadcaster.
The messaging is split. In the French-speaking area, the far-right stresses cost savings&financial relief, avoiding ideology. In the Swiss German part, itβs βslashing left-leaning mediaβ
Today, class, we will once again discuss "revealed preferences"
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women β and interactions with them β through the lens of sex
Also, "underage women" isn't a thing. If they're under age, they're not women. That's what under age literally means.
Call for Papers: The 2026 Women in Empirical Microeconomics Conference will be held Oct 16β17 at UChicagoβs David Rubenstein Forum. All early-career, tenure-track scholars are invited to submit works in progress across empirical micro fields.

Researching this week's column, I stumbled across something that amazed me:
the near-absence of reliable data about climate impacts over most of the
world. Due to the rich world's failure to fund research. We don't know
because our governments don't care. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Look, I know this weaponization of male academic interest is the oldest story in the book, but itβs just so, so pernicious. Itβs awful to the women directly involved, but itβs also awful to *all* women in the academy, who have to live in its shadow all the time.
Summers called this female Chinese economist βperil.β
βYellow perilβ was partially built on the claim that Chinese women were sexually immoral threats.
That logic fueled the Page Act of 1875, which barred Chinese women by presuming they were prostitutes, even before the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.
Is social media dying? How much has Twitter changed as it became X? Which party now dominates the conversation?
Using nationally representative ANES data from 2020 & 2024, I map how the U.S. social media landscape has transformed.

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages donβt exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.
