My article on Queen Anne’s wardrobe has just been published OA.

I provide a qualitative & quantitative overview of her extensive wardrobe accounts (incl makers & suppliers) & show how fashion influenced her representation!

I heard a replica played at Duff House in Banff some years ago. An other-worldly sound.

An historical illustration depicting a crowded scene in front of an old building with Edinburgh Castle visible in the background, situated on a hill. Numerous individuals are gathered, listening to a figure standing on an elevated platform.

#OnThisDay in 1638, members of the Scottish nobility signed the National Covenant at the churchyard of Greyfriars Kirk, in Edinburgh. In doing so, they opposed Charles I's proposed reforms of the Church of Scotland.

On another occasion also, when the blessed man was living for some days in the province of the Picts, he was obliged to cross the river Nesa; & when he reached the bank of the river, he saw some of the inhabitants burying an unfortunate man, who, according to the account of those who were burying him, was a short time before seized, as he was swimming, & bitten most severely by a monster that lived in the water; his wretched body was, though too late, taken out with a hook, by those who came to his assistance in a boat. The blessed man, on hearing this, was so far from being dismayed, that he directed one of his companions to swim over & row across the coble that was moored at the farther bank. & Lugne Mocumin hearing the command of the excellent man, obeyed without the least delay, taking off all his clothes, except his tunic, & leaping into the water. But the monster, which, so far from being satiated, was only roused for more prey, was lying at the bottom of the stream, & when it felt the water disturbed above by the man swimming, suddenly rushed out, &, giving an awful roar, darted after him, with its mouth wide open, as the man swam in the middle of the stream. Then the blessed man observing this, raised his holy hand, while all the rest, brethren as well as strangers, were stupefied with terror, &, invoking the name of God, formed the saving sign of the cross in the air, & commanded the ferocious monster, saying, "Thou shalt go no further, nor touch the man; go back with all speed." Then at the voice of the saint, the monster was terrified, & fled more quickly than if it had been pulled back with ropes, though it had just got so near to Lugne, as he swam, that there was not more than the length of a spear-staff between the man & the beast. Then the brethren seeing that the monster had gone back, & that their comrade Lugne returned to them in the boat safe & sound, were struck with admiration, & gave glory to God in the blessed man.

A Pictish carved stone. At the top are two coiling S-shaped creatures with staring eyes, sharp teeth and lolling tongues; strange curled and dotted objects float between them. Below these two monsters is what is known as a "Pictish Beast", a strange, aquatic-looking creature with a long snout; its body is decorated with knotwork carving. At the base of the image is a highly ornamented Pictish double-disc crossed with a z-rod.

The first recorded sighting of a monster connected to Loch Ness is in Adomnán’s VITA COLUMBÆ, c.7th/8th century CE. St Columba sends it packing

Cool carpets and outrageous designer rugs aren't a new invention. Way back in 1954, Glasgow's Templeton's carpet factory was called upon to weave this artist's palette for an art club in Canada.

Mt. Fuji Landscape Kimono by Itchiku Kubota
This extraordinary kimono is a masterpiece by the celebrated artist Itchiku Kubota, who revitalized the lost 16th-century tsujigahana dyeing technique. The garment serves as a panoramic canvas, depicting a monumental view of Mt. Fuji. The snow-capped peak is rendered in brilliant gold and pale yellow at the top, transitioning into lush greens and deep forest teals along the mountain's slopes. Below the mountain, the landscape transforms into a vibrant, ethereal sea of clouds and foothills bathed in a sunset palette of violet, fiery orange, and deep indigo. The entire piece is characterized by its rich, crinkled texture and complex tie-dyeing, which creates a "shimmering," almost holographic effect across the silk.

Chantilly on the left. Two white porcelain bottles with square tops and four sides that flare from the base of the next into a somewhat gourd-like shape, painted with flowers in characteristic blue, orange and green

Two bottles, one produced in Arita, Japan (c1680-1700), the other in France at the Chantilly factory (c1735-40). Which is which? Answer in the alt. George R Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto #c18th #c18 #18thc

Dun Troddan Broch. The image shows the exterior of the broch, a rounded tower made of stone whose outer walls converge as they rise. The near and right-hand sides rise to impressive height, with the left side has much lower walls. The scene is in sunlight.

Dun Troddan Broch, one of two unusually well-preserved Iron Age brochs that stand south-east of Glenelg in Lochaber. Like the other 500 or so brochs found mainly in the north and west of Scotland, it was built some 2,000 years ago. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...
