So when Troy sent me “Kabhi”, sampling that same iconic voice from my youth, I knew it was something special. Nostalgic, cinematic, and emotional. We worked to secure the rights to officially feature Lata Mangeshkar, something that hasn’t ever been done in electronic music.

One of my earliest memories is my dad’s Indian video store it was like a desi Blockbuster, where he played the Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham soundtrack on loop. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was the background score to my childhood: family BBQs, late-night card games, big moments and small.

Since the signing, I’ve had the chance to get to know Troy not just as an artist but as a person and we’ve found some commonalities. Both of us come from families of Indian descent, raised in Commonwealth countries, now building our careers in the U.S.

When I showed Troy and Vandana the original 2015 emails, the reaction said it all. Life has a funny way of coming back around when you keep showing up and doing the work.

We never ended up working together back then, but I never stopped being a fan.

Fast forward to almost a decade to the day of that first email: I found myself helping spearhead TroyBoi’s official signing to Ultra Records. Full circle in the most unexpected, cosmic way.

This story starts nearly 10 years ago.

I was an up-and-coming producer living in Los Angeles, always on the hunt for collaborators. One of the artists I reached out to back then was a rising producer from London named Troyboi, and his manager at the time, Vandana Gupta, whose work I admired.
