That's the key to understanding NYCFC's side of the story: it's not the money (Sheikh Monsour just has to dig in his couch cushions for Sylla's transfer fee), it's the designated player label.

That's a roster dynamic independent clubs in association football don't have to deal with, which is probably why Schalke just doesn't understand.

In MLS, if you bring a player in on a DP contract and then they have a chronic injury and can't play, you're stuck. You can't just sign another guy. /2

Oh, I don't know about that assertion. But if you have any data to support it, I'm all ears.

And the problem isn't so much whether he's playing now. It's whether his knee will hold up over time. It's one thing to gamble on a non-DP player, quite another to burn a slot with no return. /1

We tried to give them a way to stay in the transfer which limited the risk of burning a DP (they're worth their weight in gold, and more, in MLS), but they took it as some kind of double-cross.

Which is understandable, considering their financial straits. It's only human to get bitter. /3x

Schalke, on the other hand, has every incentive to try and unload damaged goods, clear some payroll and make some money on the transfer in the bargain.

We tried to give them a path to still get it done. They're insisting we jammed them, but deals falling through on a failed medical happens all the time in sports.

Usually that means just walking away, but we tried to stay in. They were just too desperate for the revenue to get to yes. /2x
