This is so cool! I love seeing RPGs used for teaching. I had one teacher that ran his whole class like an RPG. You had a character sheet, equipment, abilities, and went on quests (assignments) of your choice.
Your grade was ultimately based on your final XP earned.
For context, this is a science writing class, where students write a memo about a disaster and plan a recovery effort, so Exclusion Zone Botanist fit well! (Supporting readings included “The Great Silence” by Ted Chiang and the “In Event of Moon Disaster” memo from NASA)
We finished up by having each group do a short “mission report” where they explained the biggest challenges they encountered, including any group members lost to the forest. This mission report helped to bring their individual journaling together for our discussion afterwards. (Continued)
Some sketched as well! I kept track of risk by writing it on the board and announcing our risk level (which definitely raised the stakes). The writers in the class were enthusiastic about journeying deeper into the EZ and as a result, some of them became too corrupted to get out in time! (Continued)
Sure! I used the game to practice descriptive writing for my advanced science writing class: I had students break up into mission groups and track progress on the hex map, rolling to discover plants, check corruption, and move. They journaled short entries together (continued)

I assign the first 3 chapters of Ways of Seeing when we talk about the way we look at art is the product of history for my advanced writing class. Students always remark on how relevant Berger is in an age of visuality.
